Highlights in this auction
(Lot 21) Fatma Shanans Untitled, 2014, interweaves landscape and heritage. For Shanan, who was born and raised in the Druze village of Jullis, carpets are precious family possessions which signify identity and the connections between nature, geography, and history. In Druze culture, carpets are inextricably woven into a life of hospitality, ritual and community. They are passed from generation to generation; and when they become worn, they are carried up to the flat roofs of houses for sleeping outdoors on hot summer nights. Other carpets are piled in the fields providing a resting place during harvest time. In this large and important work from 2014, carpets and landscape become one.
(Lot 23) Nirit Takele, who immigrated to Israel from Ethiopia at the age of six is represented with Stretching Leg, an oil from 2020. Takele has developed a unique style of building or sculpting her abstracted, shaded figures. Their outlines are frequently set off by the colorful, ribbon-like borders of their Ethiopian shawls and wraps. These are not specific portraits, but rather she takes her inspiration from a remembered pose or everyday activity of the friends and family around her. Speaking of her unique portrayal of the figure, Takele has said: I want to show these characters as being full of power, and size expresses their inner, heroic strength. This is how I see my community, and this is the representation I wanted to convey in my art.
(Lot 24) Tigist Yoseph Ron also immigrated to Israel at a young age from Ethiopia, and she works most often in charcoal. Her Self-Portrait in this sale was completed during Covid lockdown. She held a one-person show at the Tel Aviv Museum of Art in 2020-21 entitled The White Paper is Black Within.
Other women artists in the sale include Rona Yefman, Noel Jabbour, Ilit Azoulay, Anna Ticho and Pamela Levy.
