PARIS.- On Thursday 1 July,
Aguttes Auction House Design Department will present a sale dedicated to 20th century design. Mixing Art Nouveau with post-war European design or fire art with precious decorative objects, the auction will be under the sign of eclecticism.
A unique piece, a bouquet of poppy flowers in talosel by the designer Line Vautrin (1913-1997) will grace the auction. The artist gave it to one of her best friends, the wife of the writer René Alleau.
At its side, the Swiss artist and designer Pierre Jeanneret (1896-1967), right-hand man of Le Corbusier (1887-1965), will be honored with three of his creations. A table with x-legs, as well as two pairs of armchairs, called "easy armchairs" and "advocate chair".
In Art Nouveau, the glassmaker Emile Gallé (1846-1904) will be illustrated with a speaking vase with iris decoration in marquetry whose delicate inscription "Vers la lumière... " ("Towards the light...") sublimates it.
One of the most famous designers of the 20th century, Charlotte Perriand (1903-1999), whose creations equipped the mass-produced housing of the Trente Glorieuses period (1945-1975), will complete the auction. A table for the students of the Cité Universitaire Internationale of Paris, equipped with two drawers in colored molded plastic, and another table created for the Cité minière de la Miferma in Cansado, Mauritania, will be presented. Both have a metal base with a multi-ply top, for the minimalist design associated with the practical and robust side, dear to the artist.
Another creator who was very popular at auction for ceramics is Pablo Picasso (1881-1973). A facetious animal from the sculptor's bestiary, an Owl from a private collection in Neuilly-sur-Seine, given as a wedding present to its owner by an American friend who loved the artist.
The sale will also feature an iconic piece by a key figure in Italian design history: a bookcase wall by Franco Albini (1905-1977). The architect-designer known for his modern creations with simple lines, shows here a concentrate of his art of rationalism. He combines in one piece of furniture a bookcase, a partition wall to separate a room and an elegant decorative element.
In 1980s design, an armchair by Peter Shire (b. 1947) will be paired with soft resin cups by Gaetano Pesce (b. 1939), as well as a floor lamp by Andrée Putman (1925-2013).
