Mushrooms: Know the Simple Steps to Grow Them

Mushroom is a good ingredient that is used in many countries as a part of their food recipes. There are many recipes in which you can add them. Apart from making the food delicious, they have enormous health benefits as well. They are rich in various nutrients and can help you fight different diseases like cancer, diabetes, high blood pressure etc.

We will have a look at the popular mushroom types that people eat and then check out the steps to grow them today. Let’s not waste the time and get started quickly.

Popular Types of Mushrooms:

White Button Mushroom

The popular mushrooms that you will see most of the time are these ones. Most of the recipes that you eat will consist of these mushrooms. If you want a mild taste, White button mushrooms are the ones you need to go for as they are not intensely flavoured.

Shiitake Mushroom

Shiitake is a Japanese word which means "oak fungus". In earlier times, they used to be found in the forests but many people have started growing them in farms now. They have umbrella-shaped brown caps. The fresh ones give you a light aroma but if you eat them after they have dried then the aroma will be quite intense.

Crimino mushroom

If you want a more flavourful option than the white button mushrooms, go for this one. It can be used interchangeably too with the white button.

Portobello mushrooms

These mushrooms are commonly used in Italian cooking, pastas and sauces. The size of these mushrooms is quite big, almost the size of the palm of your hand.

How to Grow Them?

Have a look at the steps mentioned below. Just follow them to see a steady growth of mushrooms after a few weeks.

1. Lay the compost in a tray

The first step is to gather a tray and fill it with mushroom compost material. After filling it, you have to sprinkle spawn on top.

2. Heat the soil

Now, you need to heat the soil so that the growth of the mushrooms takes place. You can use a heating pad for this. The ideal temperature is 70 degrees Fahrenheit.

3. Sprinkle water

Sprinkle water on the soil to keep it moist. Cover the tray with a wet cloth as it will favour fast growth.

4. Take them out when they have grown

Different types of mushrooms have different duration of completing their growth. After you see their caps have come out, it’s time to harvest them. Use a knife and cut them from their stem rather than pulling it completely. The reason behind not pulling is that it might damage the other surrounding mushrooms that are growing.

This is the process of growing mushrooms, isn’t that simple? Now, keep growing mushrooms and harvest each piece when their growth is completed. Keep adding spawn and sprinkle water and the growth will be steady. You can find mushroom fruiting chambers for sale which are designed with controlled air circulation and retents humidity and is a complete fit to grow mushrooms easily and quickly.
