Is it really worth going to your university lectures?

Even before the pandemic and the norm of remote working, the appeal of pressing the snooze button rather than physically being at your morning lecture has always been there. In fact, in many universities missing lectures in favour of catching up on the slides in your own time has become the new norm – but how detrimental to your learning is it to miss lectures?

For university students in Liverpool, lectures and seminars are set to be returning to the classroom as lockdown restrictions slowly continue to ease – so should you be setting alarms and scheduling your day better, or can you afford to stick to remote learning?

Read on to find out. . .

Finding out why you’re missing lectures can help you to refocus
Most of us who have ever been students before totally get it – you’re young, you’re making new friends and that involves a lot of socialising. Of course, there hasn’t been much of that recently, but in more regular times, it would be completely normal to meet your course friends down at the pub or partake in some late night gaming with your flat mates.

There’s a lot to be doing at live-in students, so where do you fit in the hours of live lectures when your social life is so hectic? What if you rarely find yourself out past 9pm but haven’t yet bonded with anyone on your course? If you’re feeling shy or lonely this could be the only excuse you need to miss lectures, preferring to catch up from the safety of your student accommodation in Liverpool.

Perhaps you simply struggle organising your time in order to get up on time for lectures – preferring to stay at home rather than risk being the last one to enter, late, again!

If any of this sounds familiar – we’ve got your back!
Missing lectures can impact how effectively you learn – but these tips can help. . .
When it comes to attending lectures, the inconvenient truth is that your physical presence does matter. Of course, it’s unrealistic to expect that you won’t miss the odd lecture or seminar here and there – but wherever possible you should be trying to get there. After all, that’s what you’re paying for!

So, here are some proactive steps you can take to help you get to lectures on time week after week.

1. Set multiple alarms: we might be starting things off with an obvious one, but we know how tempting it can be to snooze that morning alarm. It can also be all too easy to fall into a bad routine of missing lectures and not setting any alarm at all. So, set more than one alarm, and ensure your alarm clock or phone is nowhere near your bed so that you have to physically get up out of bed to turn it off.

2. Set reasonable curfews: a curfew when you’re an independent young adult doesn’t sound quite right, but for many who have a budding social life, it can be the best way to help you stay on top of a healthy work/life balance. So, got a 9am lecture? Be sure that you cut your evening drinks or movie night shorter than usual, after all, you can always make up for it on another day.

3. The best way to make friends is to turn up: We get it, nobody wants to sit there alone week after week, but the truth is that you won’t be the only one sat alone, and regular attendance is the best way to make those real life connections. You can’t form new bonds from your bedroom, so be persistent.

4. Struggling to learn? Ask the expert: If you’re really struggling with your course, it can be all too tempting to just miss the lectures so you can try and figure out the content in the privacy of your own room. However, this is one of the biggest reasons why attendance is so important – as you get the opportunity to ask questions there and then and speak with your lecturer in more detail.

Get yourself back out there
Lectures can be dull and getting yourself there can feel like a real chore – we get it. But financially it is a huge investment and you’re unlikely to get another chance. So, if you’re ready to return to lectures, it can help to be in one of the best student accommodation Liverpool has to offer, perfectly located so you never need to go far to get from bed to lecture.
