African American Quilt Show at Tampa Museum |
|

|
TAMPA, FLORIDA.- The Tampa Museum of Art presents African American Quilt Show, through April 3, 2005. The exhibition was organized by Maude Southwell Wahlman, an important collector and renowned scholar of African American textiles. This exhibition will look at the rich legacy of visual symbols in the African culture, as told through quilts. This tradition has contributed to a style of quilting unique to the African American culture, demonstrated by forty works, which span most of the twentieth century. Organized from one of the most important privately held collections of this material, the exhibition will offer a visual feast of color and design that stimulates a greater understanding of African traditions, and the African-American experience. The exhibition includes the work of a number of living quilters who have recently come to great acclaim, such as Mozell Benson and Sarah Mary Taylor.
