What You Need To Oil Paint

Oil painting is one of the oldest mediums in the world. Whether you’re a fan of Van Gogh or Monet, you enjoy oil paintings. These are not the only people who have painted using oil paints. While oil paints have some disadvantages, they offer numerous benefits and this is why they’ve managed to withstand the test of time. With that being said, you may be interested in getting involved in this form of art. If this is the case, you should know that you’re going to need to buy a handful of supplies. For instance, you’ll need canvas, paint, brushes, and other items.

Within this guide, you’re going to find out more about the supplies you’re going to need to paint an oil painting.

Paint
First and foremost, you need to buy oil paint. In this category, the possibilities are endless. You will find an assortment of brands to play around with. Simultaneously, you’ll find tons of colors. Remember that it is okay to mix brands. You can buy Winsor and Newton and mix those paints with Grumbacher paints or Williamsburg Paints. As you work with your paints more, you’ll find out which paints you like and which ones you don’t.

Either way, you’re going to need several colors. It is wise to buy at least one blue, yellow, red, and white. You will use white more than most other colors. So, you’ll want to buy more of that. Remember that artist oil paints are available in various sizes so you can choose the ones that best suit your budget.

Brushes
Now that you’ve bought paint, it is time to move on to brushes. This can make a big difference since each brush is designed for one purpose or another. For instance, bigger brushes will help you cover the canvas much quicker. Smaller bushes are best for putting on the fine details. You’ll also find different shapes. Once you’ve played around with these brushes, you’ll be able to find out what they’re good for. It is wise to have a variety of brushes on hand. This ensures that you’ll be able to create different brush strokes easily.

That can make your painting more dramatic and exciting.

Cleaner
Since you’re using oil paints, you will not be able to clean your brushes with water. Instead, you’re going to need something much stronger. You can’t take a gamble like you would on Sbobet88 in this category. Some solvents are not worth the money. Also, you have to understand that some are very harmful to your health. With that being said, you should try to find a good solvent that will protect you. Going with a low-odor model is highly recommended.

You should try to paint outside or leave a window open. This will allow the vapors to escape so you don’t inhale them. If you have asthma, you may want to wear a mask while painting. Either way, you’re going to need to use solvents to thin your paint and clean your brushes.

Medium
Next, you’ll need to find a good medium. This can be difficult since you’re new to oil painting. You have to understand that each medium is going to impact your paint in one way or another. For instance, some mediums will slow the drying process but they’ll make the paint thinner. Others will make the paint thicker while speeding up the process. Then, you have others are going to speed up the drying process without impacting the paint’s consistency. This may seem like a lot to take in and it is.

However, most beginners will be fine with one or two mediums. For instance, you should try to learn more about linseed oil and walnut oil. Both are good options for new painters.

Canvas
Now, you need to find a canvas. This is very important. Without canvas, you won’t have a platform for your painting. For beginners, it is a good idea to stick with cheaper, pre-stretched canvas. This will allow you to start painting immediately. Or, you can buy a roll of canvas and stretch it yourself. As a new painter, it is best to spend less since your first few paintings will likely be pretty bad. Don’t worry about that. You’re going to get much better and you continue practicing and improving.
