OUDENAARDE.- [by’ro] and the Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten van Oudenaarde announce an exhibition of works by Martine Laquiere.

Martine Laquiere works with photography as a medium. In her work concepts such as image, copy, time and appropriation are treated both in a playful and serious way.

La Modification is an appropriate title for this exhibition that is almost exclusively dedicated to the fascination with literature.

Central in this exhibition hangs: "Le temps perdu retrouvé", a series of photographs made, with technical precision and love for the book covers of the iconic NRF Gallimard series of "A la recherche du temps perdu" by Marcel Proust, a "roman fleuve", one of the most important works in the modern literature.

The series “Intellectuele Stillevens – Natures Mortes Intellectuelles – Intellectual Still Lives”. shows with great care and sense of detail a reconstructed "writing table" by an author from the world literature. In addition there is an open book of the author with, his or her name tag in it.

In At the sink-Benjamin, 2016 she proves how good she is inventing powerful contemporary images. The model looks away from the book, one of the most important reference works in contemporary art history, and a reference to photography as a medium. Despite the fact that her eyes are fixated on the faucet, splattered with paint and stained in the sink, she is totally absorbed by what she just read. This ode to reading, created, in situ in the Academy of Fine Art of Oudenaarde is, in its harmonic ‘mise en scene’ and its use of contrasting props, a subtle reference to the contemporary art from the likes of Jeff Wall and Victor Burgin and the classical painting à la Vermeer.

To frame Martine Laquiere’s work a selection from the collection of artist's books by Alfred Vandaele was made. Work from the likes of Hanne Darboven, Tacita Dean, Roni Horn and Christopher Williams supplements and confronts the work of Martine Laquiere
