ISTANBUL.- The Elgiz Museum’s 8th Terrace Exhibition invites us to reconsider our routine experiences with light and its fluctuations. Fugitive Shadow is an outdoor sculpture exhibition, showcasing 28 works by Turkish and International artists. The theme of this year’s exhibition, Fugitive Shadow, is based on Plato’s Allegory of the Cave from his seminal 5th century work, The Republic. The Allegory of the Cave is a dialogue surrounding the nature of reality with the shadows being a metaphor for the illusory world.

The museum and its terrace, located in the heart of the Maslak business district of Istanbul is encircled by high rise towers and sky scrapers which gives rise to changing light conditions. The progression of daylight and its ensuing shadows across the terrace were observed by the museum executive during the early days of the terrace exhibitions which began in 2012.

Artworks create dialogues around the shadow both in metaphor and through aesthetic representation. The works selected for the 8th Terrace exhibition promise to make it an Elgiz Museum classic and are an homage to Benvenuto Cellini and other great sculpture artists.

Artists’ answered an open call and their applications were evaluated by the Terrace Exhibition Advisory Committee consisting of academics and artists: Seyhun Topuz, Rahmi Aksungur, Nilüfer Ergin, Haşim Nur Gürel and Can Elgiz. This year there are 3 guest committee members; Evrim Altuğ, the President of AICA Turkey, Art Critic and Academician Nazlı Pektaş and Sarıyer Deputy Mayor and Architect Gökhan Zeybek. The exhibition catalogue provides essays on sculpture and its development in Turkey by Kıraç Foundation General Manager Özalp Birol, Advisory Board member Haşim Nur Gürel and Nazlı Pektaş.
