BOSTON, MASS.- A winner’s medal issued for the London 2012 Summer Olympics sold for $55,831 according to Boston-based RR Auction.

The medal is Gilt silver, 85 mm, 433 gm, designed by British artist David Watkins. The front of the medal features text across the top, “XXX Olympiad London 2012,” above the winged Nike over Panathinaikon Stadium with the Acropolis in the background; the reverse features the emblem of the London Games against an abstract linear background.

The purple ribbon is present but detached at the seam, with “London 2012” and the Olympic rings embroidered in white.

The event, which is inscribed along the bottom edge of the medal, will be disclosed to the winning bidder—a collector from the UK who wishes to remain anonymous.

“Any winner’s medals from more recent Olympic Games are extremely scarce and this is one of the very first London 2012 gold medals to be publicly offered,” said Robert Livingston, Executive VP at RR Auction.

Highlights from the sale include, but are not limited by:

• Innsbruck 1976 Winter Olympics Torch, sold for $22,826.

• London 1908 Summer Olympics Gold Winner’s Medal, sold for $19,232.

• Tokyo 1964 Summer Olympics Torch and Original Box Holder, sold $15,784.

• London 1908 Summer Olympics Gilt Silver Participation Medal, sold for $12,426.

• Atlanta 1996 Summer Olympics Set of Gold, Silver, and Bronze Winner’s Medals, sold for $11,026.

• Cortina 1956 Winter Olympics Silver Winner’s Medal, sold for $9,432

The Olympic Memorabilia auction from RR Auction began on July 14 and concluded on July 21.
