NEW YORK, NY.- Elizabeth Dee announced the move and expansion of the gallery to 2033/2037 Fifth Avenue, occupying the original site of the Studio Museum of Harlem.

Dee will establish the gallery at the 12,000-square foot building, situated next to The National Black Theatre. The new gallery will open to the public in spring 2016. Originally built in 1940, the gallery will return the building to its former life as a space for Contemporary art. The move represents an expansion of Dee’s international gallery program after 15 successful years in Chelsea.

“After an extensive year-long search, we are extremely fortunate to secure this location as an inspiring home for the gallery’s next chapter,” says Dee. “The sky is wide open to the exhibitions we can realize here, and to the scale of collaborations this will allow us to build.”

Prior to the public opening, the gallery hopes to establish a new educational initiative for Harlem-based children, in a joint venture with local non-profit institutions and schools. The gallery also plans several pre-opening events, with performances, talks, and screenings with artists. Dee, a Harlem resident, anticipates that the new gallery will bring a new audience to the area, and open up its possibilities to internationally renowned galleries.

The move ends a highly successful decade-and-a-half at its original location in the west Chelsea neighborhood. Elizabeth Dee originally established the gallery in 2002 as a home for emerging and innovative artists working across media. Since then, Dee’s program resulted in over 100 critically acclaimed exhibitions and pioneering productions by contemporary artists. The gallery has produced numerous groundbreaking, first and internationally recognized exhibitions by such artists as Mac Adams, Mark Barrow, Philippe Decrauzat, Leo Gabin (debut), John Giorno, Miranda Lichtenstein, Carl Ostendarp, Adrian Piper, Ryan Trecartin (debut), Julie Wachtel, among others.

In 2009, Dee co-founded Independent, the invitational art fair in New York and Brussels with an international network of galleries. She was recently featured as a collaborator in Art + Auction: Power 100 Innovators for 2015: People Changing The Art World Landscape.

Please note that the gallery offices will be open at the new location by appointment. Office hours are Monday-Friday, 10-6.
