NEW YORK, NY.- PULSE Contemporary Art Fair returns to the Metropolitan Pavilion, March 3–6, 2016 for the eleventh edition of PULSE New York. Welcoming an international community of 45 galleries across four continents, PULSE New York will present a number of solo artist presentations, all nominated for the PULSE Prize, a jury awarded cash grant given to an artist of distinction.

To highlight one of these Prize nominees, we would like to interest you in a piece featuring the work of artist Yumi Janairo Roth, represented by Sienna Patti and her upcoming solo presentation at PULSE New York as a Prize Nominee, as well as her sculpture, Stacked Datsun as part of PULSE’s large-scale installation platform, PROJECTS.

Pallets are the workhorses of domestic and international shipping, each one typically carrying hundreds of pounds of goods. Always recycled, pallets travel from destination to destination, transporting different loads and always separated from their point of origin. By decorating these banal objects with delicate carvings and inlay with mother of pearl, Roth creates beauty within these objects, belying their functionality and provoking the viewer to observe their ornamentation with the attention in which they are often overlooked.

Stacked in a 1960’s converted Datsun pickup truck and piled nearly 10 feet high, Roth’s pallets are commentary of how we value labor as well as ideas about memory, immigration and displacement in western culture. By re-contextualizing how the objects are perceived, Roth glorifies the idea of the disposable and the history of their use, finding a way to make what’s unobserved look beautiful.

Stacked Datsun will debut at PULSE New York as part of PROJECTS in tandem with a solo exhibition, presented by Sienna Patti.
