LONDON.- Acclaimed design studio Vanderhurd and contemporary artist, Cipriano Martinez, will present a collection of limited edition rugs at
Maddox Arts from 27th November to 19th December 2015. The collection is the result of a collaboration between the two, which sees Vanderhurd translate Martinezs complex graphic artworks, which represent urban geometrical abstractions, into appealing textile designs.
Christine Van Der Hurd, Designer and Director of Vanderhurd, and Cipriano Martinez realised their mutual appreciation for traditional artistic techniques and geometric design in 2013. Both share a belief in the artistic, by-hand approach for the creation of something of true value. Cipriano Martinez paints oil on canvas and screen prints his artwork, while Vanderhurd rugs are woven using traditional methods by highly skilled craftsmen in India.
In contrast to the ordered geometry found in the classic Vanderhurd designs, Martinez enjoys the disruption and dislocation of pattern, creating conflict between order and chaos.
Vanderhurd is producing nine different rug designs of varying sizes. Eight rugs will be woven as silk dhurries, which require a yarn spinning technique that is entirely unique to Vanderhurd. The silk gives the dhurrie a discrete lustre, a strong colour with a delicate Abrash effect as well as long lasting durability. The final rug will be a silk cut pile construction with a wool ground. Each design will be in an edition of three and available for sale through Maddox Arts.
Christine Van Der Hurd comments: This collaboration has been a fascinating process, we have enjoyed the challenges of adapting our designs, colours and construction processes to accommodate every artistic detail presented to us by Martinez.
Cipriano Martinez comments: The greatest challenge for me was adapting to the different format and understanding that a perfect translation of my work was not possible, even though I was never expecting, nor hoping, for a neat and easy process. However, I have relished the implications of this new medium and am very pleased with the results.
A small selection of Cipriano Martinez oil paintings will be accompanying the exhibition.
