Phillips announces senior appointments in 20th Century and Contemporary Art

NEW YORK, NY.- Phillips announces the appointments of Hugues Joffre as Chairman, United Kingdom and Europe, and Worldwide Head of 20th Century Art, and Jean-Paul Engelen as Worldwide Head of Contemporary Art. As leading specialists in their corresponding fields, Mr. Joffre and Mr. Engelen will strengthen Phillips' team of international specialists in the 20th Century and Contemporary Art Department, while broadening the range of art and expertise on offer.

One of the world’s leading experts in 20th century and post-war art with over 30 years experience, Mr. Joffre will be based in London and will also act as principal auctioneer for modern and contemporary art auctions in London and New York. As Phillips looks to meet the demands of the market, Mr. Joffre will lead the company’s efforts to offer an increasing amount of 20th century art alongside contemporary works. He will work closely with Jean-Paul Engelen who will be based in New York and brings over 20 years of international experience at the forefront of the contemporary art scene, including 16 years at another international auction house and four years at Qatar Museums. Both will report to Edward Dolman, Chairman and CEO of Phillips.

HUGUES JOFFRE
Born and educated in France, Mr. Joffre started his career at Sotheby's in the 1980s where he oversaw their contemporary art department in Europe. In the early 1990s, Mr. Joffre joined Christie's as worldwide head of 20th century art, leading the category through a period of significant growth, and later becoming Chairman of the Executive Board of Christie's France, a post he held until 2001.

While at Sotheby's and Christie's, Mr. Joffre was one of the principal auctioneers for modern and contemporary art sales in London, New York, Milan and Amsterdam. He was also a principal auctioneer in Monaco for major sales in other categories including old master paintings and traditional 18th century French furniture, as well as important single-owner sales, most notably the Karl Lagerfeld and Henri Samuel collections.

In 2002 Mr. Joffre co-founded and acted as principal of Lasartis, an art advisory business which worked with a number of significant private collectors, before he re-joined Christie's in 2010 as a senior international director based in London.

JEAN-PAUL ENGELEN
With extensive experience working with artists of our time, Mr. Engelen comes to Phillips from Qatar Museums where he was Director of Public Art Programs, beginning in 2011. In this role Mr. Engelen was responsible for a significant public art installation program, the establishment of an Artist in Residence program and space, and Contemporary Art exhibitions. Mr. Engelen worked directly with top international contemporary artists on notable exhibitions including Damien Hirst, Richard Serra, Cai Guo Qiang, and Takashi Murakami. Mr. Engelen also oversaw over three dozen site-specific public art installations and artist commissions including “East West West East” by Richard Serra, “The Miraculous Journey” by Damien Hirst, “Salwa Road Murals” by eL Seed, and “The Secrets of Karbala" by Wael Shawky. Prior to Qatar Museums, Mr. Engelen spent 16 years at Christie’s, with his last four years in the role of Senior Specialist & Director of Post-War and Contemporary Art.

Mr. Engelen is Chairman of de Ateliers Support Foundation, Amsterdam, and a Jury member of the Fire Station Artist in Residence, Doha Qatar.
