NEW YORK, NY.- The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum announces the release of the Guggenheim iPad app, which offers a unique exploratory experience from anywhere in the world. The free app is available to download at guggenheim.org/app. An extension of the existing Guggenheim app for iPhones and Android handsets, the new iPad app brings together a rich array of content highlighting the museums collections and exhibitions as well as its publications archive, offering access to more than 100 out-of-print titles dating back to the 1930s. The app encourages deeper engagement with multimedia content through slideshows, audio commentary, essays, and video interviews with artists and curators. It also features easy navigation by category, including Artworks, Building, Collection, Exhibitions, Publications, and Video. Users can explore the history of the museum and its Frank Lloyd Wrightdesigned building; interact with content from current and past exhibitions; and access information about more than 1,600 artworks from the museums collection.
The Guggenheim app has been designed to be accessible for users with disabilities. In addition to a video-based guide to select works in the museums Thannhauser Collection presented in American Sign Language (ASL), the app features transcripts and video closed captioning for users who are deaf or hard of hearing. The app is also compatible with VoiceOver and offers text enlargement options for users who are blind or have low vision.
The Guggenheim app was developed by the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and Acoustiguide Interactive. The app is supported by Bloomberg Philanthropies as part of the Bloomberg Connects initiative, a global commitment to increase access to cultural institutions and enhance visitor experiences through cutting edge technology and digital engagement.
Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation
Founded in 1937, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation is dedicated to promoting the understanding and appreciation of art, primarily of the modern and contemporary periods, through exhibitions, education programs, research initiatives, and publications. The Guggenheim network that began in the 1970s when the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, was joined by the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, Venice, has since expanded to include the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao (opened 1997) and the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi (currently in development). The Guggenheim Foundation continues to forge international collaborations that celebrate contemporary art, architecture, and design within and beyond the walls of the museum, including the Guggenheim UBS MAP Global Art Initiative and The Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation Chinese Art Initiative.
