TEL AVIV.- Backyard is a complex and thought-provoking overview of Katzensteins wide-ranging oeuvre from the 1980s through present. The exhibitions title alludes to things, thoughts and emotions behind the realities, those that are not immediately visible or that remain unseen. The title also communicates with the medium of architecture and with previous works by Katzenstein, while mediating between past and future by means of temporal disruptions.
Katzenstein (b. 1951, Tel Aviv) is renowned for his sculpture, performance, music, machines and films. The exhibition highlights the range of his art making process, and the artist expertly presents all mediums simultaneously, which provides visitors to the exhibition with a highly intimate and multisensory experience.
Backyard is situated in three of the Museums main gallery spaces, with each space featuring a distinct thematic tone. Each of the separate spaces reflects, reiterates and enriches the shared motifs of the others. The dynamic exhibition examines different aspects of Katzensteins multi-disciplinary work in a range of mediums- video, sculpture, sound and robotics and language, all of which express a metaphorical, imaginary world that echoes danger and menace, whose central axis is the human body and hybrid-looking objects.
The exhibition is on view at the
Tel Aviv Museum of Art until September 15th.
