FLINT, MICH.- The FIA presents the Edvard Munch exhibition in the Graphics Gallery through September 6, 2015. Most famously known for his painting, The Scream, Edvard Munch’s graphic work is an integral part of his oeuvre. Comprising over 25 works on paper, this exhibition includes lithographs, woodblocks, etchings, drawings, drypoint, and intaglio by the Norwegian artist. Munch’s graphic activities spanned 50 years from his first prints in 1894 to his death in 1944. While most of the works in the exhibition are from his early years, a few later works are represented.

According to Munch, he produced around 30,000 graphic works in his lifetime. Munch was associated with the international development of Symbolism in the 1890s and later regarded as a pioneer in the Expressionist movement. Like some of his contemporaries’ works, his art was very much influenced by his mood and personal life.

From August 3 to October 11, the FIA will host the Detroit Institute of Arts’ Nut Gatherers (1882) by French artist William-Aldophe Bouguereau (1825–1905). This painting, which rarely goes on loan because of its popularity among DIA visitors (it was once the #1-selling postcard in the gift shop), will be on view in the Johnson Gallery near other important works of European and American 19th-century art in the FIA collection. Make sure you stop by and see this painting before it returns home!

The exhibition Beauty, Passion and Bliss: 19th-Century Masterworks from the Dahesh Museum of Art closes on August 16, 2015. The show features more than 50 paintings and sculptures from the Dahesh collection that represent masterworks of the European academic tradition, including historical, religious and mythological subjects, as well as daily life scenes, landscapes, idealized rustic images and several works in the Orientalist tradition. Don’t miss your chance to see these breathtaking works of art.
