LOS ANGELES, CA.- Eli and Edythe Broad announced that Paul Pastorek has joined
The Eli and Edythe Broad Foundation's education team. Paul and Gregory McGinity, currently The Broad Foundation's senior managing director, will jointly serve as co-executive directors of the foundation's education work.
Paul served as the Louisiana state superintendent from 2007 to 2011, leading the state's department of education as it raised the bar on standards and accountability for all schools in Louisiana. He also directed the state's efforts to turn around more than 100 of Louisiana's most challenged schools, including the rebuilding of elementary and secondary schools in New Orleans devastated by Hurricane Katrina.
An attorney, Paul has had a varied career, serving most recently as chief administrative officer, chief counsel and corporate secretary for the defense, aviation and telecommunications company EADS North America. He also was a partner, litigator and corporate attorney for 27 years in Louisiana and Washington, D.C., and in 2002, Paul was appointed as general counsel of NASA, where he directed a 150-attorney legal team and served as the agency's chief ethics officer.
Gregory has worked for the foundation since 2003, leading our policy and advocacy work. Prior to joining the foundation, Gregory was the senior education policy consultant to the California State Board of Education, where he worked on the creation of California's academic content standards and assessment system. Gregory previously worked for two members of Congress and also served as a legislative liaison at the U.S. Department of Education.
Given Paul's experience in New Orleans and The Broad Foundation's investment strategy to advance state-run recovery school districts that focus on dramatically improving the lowest-performing public schools, he will oversee our work to advance alternative governance models and create more high-quality options for families. Paul will also guide our program investments, working closely with Gregory, who will continue to oversee our policy investments and advocacy initiatives.
Additionally, we are sorry that Bruce Reed has decided to step down as president of The Eli and Edythe Broad Foundation. However, he will remain as a consultant and senior advisor to the foundation through Aug. 31. A 30-year veteran of policy and public service, Bruce is eager to devote more time to a wide range of domestic issues, as well as to his lifelong interests in writing and politics. We are pleased that Bruce will remain a member of The Broad Center's board of directors.
Bruce has approached his work at the foundation with energy, enthusiasm and a commitment to advance our work to protect the public school franchise and ensure every student in America has a shot at a great education and productive life. We have benefitted from his political acumen and sharp policy instincts.
