NEW YORK, NY.- Artist Eric Dyer’s Copenhagen Cycles Journey, a dizzying bicycle ride through an intricate reconstruction of the Danish capital, is being shown on Times Square’s electronic billboards from 11:57 pm to midnight each night in July. This project is a part of Midnight Moment, a monthly presentation by The Times Square Advertising Coalition and Times Square Arts.

Copenhagen Cycles Journey features moving images of Copenhagen that swirl across the screen and establish a dizzying pace as the viewer is led through a tour of the city in what feels like a pop-up book come to life. Dyer began the project during a Fulbright Fellowship, when he spent eight months exploring and videotaping Copenhagen from the seat of his bicycle. The artist selected sequential stills from the footage to construct several zoetrope-like cut-paper sculptures, capturing the rotation of the sculptures on high-definition video to create the final product.

Tim Tompkins, President of the Times Square Alliance, said, “Eric Dyer will lead Times Square’s visitors all the way to Copenhagen, directly from the heart of New York. For the month of July, Times Square will have yet one more reason to be known as the Crossroads of the World.”

Sherry Dobbin, Times Square Arts Director, said, “We have been introduced to Eric’s work through our great New York City cultural partners, Moving Image Fair and Creative Capital.”

Fred Rosenberg, President of the Times Square Advertising Coalition, said, “Each month, the featured artist finds a new way to re-invent the Midnight Moment. Eric Dyer’s video adds an entirely new visual technique to the Midnight Moment, establishing a distinctive look and taking advantage of the high-tech digital screens.”

Artist Eric Dyer, said, “I am honored to bring this work to Times Square and New York- a metropolis of cultural collage, cyclic rebirth, and perpetual motion.”

Ronald Feldman, Director of Ronald Feldman Fine Arts, said, "With Times Square being the pinnacle of commerce, tourism, advertising and the newest technological trends, Dyer reinvents an antique method of motion pictures by combining digital footage, sculpture, collage and kinetics to create his mesmerizing video pieces."

Eric Dyer is an artist, experimental filmmaker, and educator. His work has been exhibited worldwide at events and venues such as the Smithsonian National Gallery of Art, Ars Electronica, the London International Animation Festival, and the Cairo and Venice Biennales. He has been honored as a Fulbright Fellow, Sundance New Frontier Artist, Creative Capital Artist, and Guggenheim Fellow. Dyer's work explores a variety of cyclic ideas and themes through zoetrope-like sculptures. He teaches animation at UMBC in Baltimore and is represented by Ronald Feldman Fine Arts, New York.
