NEW ORLEANS, LA.- The painting "Wendy and Me," which was stolen from the
Rodrigue Gallery on Royal Street Tuesday, was found by members of the punk rock band Stereo Fire Empire leaning against the Omni Royal Hotel late Tuesday evening. The men took the painting to the NOPD's Eighth District Station and gave it to the police.
"Wendy and Me" is currently being re-framed and will return to public view at George Rodrigue Gallery (730 Royal Street) later this afternoon.
"We are so thankful for the good Samaritans that saved this special artwork." Said Jacques Rodrigue. "Dad painted 'Wendy and Me' for his wedding to Wendy so this is an irreplaceable piece to my family. We are overjoyed to have it returned undamaged."
Garry G. Flot of the New Orleans Police Department said the white male believed to have stolen the painting is still at large.
The band recovered two pieces of art. One painting, "Wendy and Me" which was stolen from the Rodrigue Gallery, the other piece was a print that was likely sold through the George Rodrigue Foundation of the Arts several years ago. Police are trying to locate the owner.
The alleged thief stole the painting "Wendy and Me" valued at $250k directly off the wall of the gallery's current retrospective celebrating George Rodrigue's career. The sentimental painting depicted the artist George Rodrigue as a blue dog wearing a tuxedo standing next to his wife Wendy in a wedding gown. The piece was painted as George and Wendy's wedding invitation.
