BOSTON, MASS.- Jill Medvedow, Ellen Matilda Poss Director of the
Institute of Contemporary Art/Boston, announced today the appointment of a new Senior Curator, Dan Byers. Byers, who will join the ICA in early February, is currently the Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Carnegie Museum of Art. During his tenure at the Carnegie, Byers organized Ragnar Kjartansson: Song, which was on view at the ICA from December 2012 to April 2013, and co-curated the 2013 Carnegie International, a major exhibition of international art. Byers joins Eva Respini, the newly appointed Barbara Lee Chief Curator, in the ICAs curatorial department.
The ICA is a national center for artistic experimentation and achievement led by a strong curatorial team with a broad vision, said Medvedow. We are thrilled to welcome Dan to the ICA and look forward to his work with the curatorial team in presenting the best artists of our time.
Dan brings considerable curatorial experience, a depth of knowledge of the national and international contemporary art landscape, and a collaborative spirit, said Respini. Dan's commitment to putting the interests of artists and their work first makes him an ideal curator for the museum.
"I am thrilled to be heading to the ICA at this galvanizing moment. Jill Medvedow continues to thoroughly energize this great institution as can be seen by the transformative gift of the Barbara Lee Collection of Art by Women and the appointment of Eva Respini as the new Barbara Lee Chief Curator, said Byers. Growing up just outside Boston, I had no idea I'd ever return to the area. I'm very happy to be coming home."
Byers led the department of contemporary and modern art department at the Carnegie Museum of Art since 2009, and was appointed the Richard Armstrong Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art in 2012. Along with the Carnegie International, which he co-curated with Daniel Baumann and Tina Kukielski, and the Kjartansson exhibition, he has overseen the exhibition program and acquisitions, bringing in works by many artists such as Rodney Graham, Nicole Eisenman, Cathy Wilkes, Karen Kilimnik, Lynda Benglis, Mladen Stilinovic and Dinh Q. Le. He also organized solo exhibitions of Cathy Wilkes, James Lee Byars, David Hartt, and Pierre Leguillon, along with group exhibitions such as Reanimation, featuring William E. Jones, Joachim Koester and Nashashibi/Skaer. Prior to his work at the Carnegie Museum, Byers was a curatorial fellow at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, and assistant to the directors at the Fabric Workshop and Museum in Philadelphia. He was recently Adjunct Assistant Professor at Carnegie Mellon University School of Arts MFA program, and currently sits on the National Advisory Committee of the Tang Teaching Museum and Art Gallery at Skidmore College and the Artist Advisory Committee of the Fabric Workshop and Museum. Byers, who has published many essays on artists such as Jeronimo Elespe, Michelle Grabner and Joachim Koester, holds an MA from the Center for Curatorial Studies at Bard College and a BS in Studio Art from Skidmore College.
