Sotheby's Institute of Art now accepting registrations for autumn courses in mainland China and Hong Kong
Extraordinary Jewels: 1780 to 1980: This three-day course highlights two centuries of craftsmanship and design, from the diamonds that glittered at the courts of the ancien régime through historical revivalism and the birth of such legendary firms as Cartier and Boucheron, and into the years of innovation and creativity that followed the First and Second World Wars.



NEW YORK, NY.- Sotheby's Institute of Art is now accepting registrations for two educational courses that will be offered in China this autumn: Contemporary Art in China Today (Hangzhou, September 3 – 6, 2013), offered in partnership with the China Academy of Art in Hangzhou, and Extraordinary Jewels: 1780 – 1980 (Hong Kong, October 5 – 7, 2013). Both courses are designed for art world professionals and enthusiasts interested in gaining further insight into these subjects and are taught by professional experts and scholars in the field. Translation to and from Mandarin and English will be provided for the course in Hangzhou.

Contemporary Art in China Today
Hangzhou, China: September 3 – 6, 2013

This exciting four-day course provides an understanding of the latest developments in contemporary art in China today. Through lectures and exclusive visits to artists’ studios and local museums, participants gain insight into the background and practice of art in China across a range of media such as ink painting and printmaking. Covering art forms that are unique to Chinese culture as well as recent trends in art practice pursued by the emergent generation of artists, this course is designed for those seeking to increase their knowledge and understanding of the structures, techniques and cultural contexts of contemporary Chinese art. Lectures offer a brief background of twentieth-century art in China while the primary focus is on recent developments over the past decade. The course is led by Katie Hill, a lecturer at Sotheby’s Institute of Art for the Master’s programme in East Asian Art and the online course in Contemporary Chinese Art. The site visits take place in and around the China Academy of Art, which was founded in 1928 in Hangzhou and is today considered one of the most influential fine art academies in China. The course is organized in association with Culture Continuum Consulting Co., Ltd.

Fee: £1550. This fee includes the course materials, lunches and translation to and from Mandarin and English.

Extraordinary Jewels: 1780 to 1980
Hong Kong: October 5 – 7, 2013

This three-day course highlights two centuries of craftsmanship and design, from the diamonds that glittered at the courts of the ancien régime through historical revivalism and the birth of such legendary firms as Cartier and Boucheron, and into the years of innovation and creativity that followed the First and Second World Wars. Based on her best-selling book, Understanding Jewellery, the course is lead by Daniela Mascetti, Senior Specialist, International Jewellery, Sotheby’s. A handling session will complement classroom-based lectures.
