ISTANBUL.- For the inaugural edition,
ArtInternational Istanbul (16-18 September 2013) will show new commissions by a selection of international artists, curated by Stephane Ackermann, Artistic Director.
Artists commissioned to create works include: David Claerbout, Camila Rocha, Ahmet Ögüt, Tal Isaac Hadad and Gul Kozacioğlu.
David Claerbout, represented by Yvon Lambert and Hauser & Wirth, will premier his film, Travel (1996-2013), a journey portrayed through one continuous camera movement - beginning in a park, moving through a dark European forest, into an Amazonian jungle and exiting through a forest revealing a monotonous suburban plain. Camila Rocha will present the performance To See The Band Passing By
in memory of the late artist, writer and curator Huseyin Bahri Alptekin, in which a local band will perform on the opening day of the fair. Ahmet Ögüt will display a new piece installed at various corners and intersections of the fair grounds, comprised of lightweight screens with projected videos of sign spinners titled Fair Wage For Made-Up Job. Tal Isaac Hadad will perform a new work entitled Piano Constraints, a selection of compositions by various composers modified and performed on multiple grand pianos. In addition the fair will present significant new interventionist pieces by Wilhem Latchoumia and a new sound work installation by performance artist Gül Kozacioğlu, Voices Dispersed.
Additional events include a curated selection by Özkan Cangüven of new works presented by non-profit art spaces and organisations from Istanbul and a video-screening programme of artists from the participating galleries, curated by Başak Senova. This screening program will be played throughout the duration of the fair.
Özkan Cangüven, Curator of the non-profit art programme, commented, ArtInternational Istanbul will bring together prominent local and international galleries in its inaugural edition at Haliç Congress Center this September. I believe with the unique venue, commissioned works, curated education and video programming as well as not-for-profit section, it will be a great addition to the emerging Istanbul art scene and will become a must-visit destination and platform for the international art community.
The non-profit section this year will host invited not-for-profit spaces, alternative institutions, and artists collectives from Turkey. These vital voices of Istanbul's diverse art scene will participate in the dialogue by presenting a glimpse of their distinctive programmes. The focus of the non-profit section this year will be on smaller-scale initiatives to highlight their crucial role in the changing Turkish art scene, believing their participation in this fair will lead to stimulating questions, discussions, and connections for everyone in ArtInternational Istanbul's first year."
