SAN FRANCISCO, CA.- The spring auction of Salon Jewelry & Watches at Bonhams, March 26 in San Francisco, simulcast in Los Angeles, achieved an impressive $1,021,875 million in sales. The auction featured a varied array of front-runner lots of earrings, rings and bracelets.

Two lots achieved $15,000 and tied for the auction’s top spot: a pair of French retro citrine earclips, circa 1940, mounted in 18k gold (est. $1,500-2,000) and a diamond solitaire ring, together with insert ring (est. $4,000-5,000). The ring’s central diamond weighs approximately 3.20 carats and its remaining diamonds weigh approximately 1.40 carats, mounted in platinum and 14k white gold.

The auction’s second spot went to a unique and charming diamond, synthetic gem, enamel and 14k bicolor gold bangle charm bracelet, depicting the stages of courtship, that brought $13,750 (est. $4,000-5,000).

Two other bracelets also did very well: a Gübelin guilloché enamel, amethyst and diamond bangle bracelet sold for $8,125 (est. $3,000-5,000) and a French 18k gold charm bracelet, suspending 26 gem-set charms of various karatage, sold for $7,500 (est. $5,500-7,500).

Lynne Arkin, Jewelry Specialist at Bonhams, says of the auction, “Our sale’s results confirm continued strong interest in signed pieces set with colored stones, as well as the diamond jewelry, along with an equally strong interest in the rare and unusual pieces.”

Rings also comprised many of the auction’s top lots, with several achieving $8,125: a diamond solitaire ring with a European-cut diamond mounted in platinum (est. $5,000-7,000); an art deco diamond and emerald ring, circa 1925, centering a modified square-cut diamond mounted in platinum (est. $3,000-5,000); and a diamond ring, centering a cut-corner, rectangular modified brilliant-cut diamond, mounted in 14k gold (est. $6,000-8,000).

Also of note was the $7,500 sale of a cultured pearl, diamond and gem-set lion clasp torsade necklace by Van Cleef & Arpels (est. $5,000-7,000). The necklace comprises nine rows of off-round cultured pearls with marquise-shaped emerald eyes and cabochon ruby nose, mounted in 18k gold.

Leading up to the successful Salon sale in San Francisco was the Period Art & Design auction including jewelry, March 25-26, which took in an impressive $761,050.

Top jewelry highlights of that sale included a gold coin, diamond and 18k gold pendant, featuring a South African Krugerrand 1983 gold coin, that sold for $4,375 (est. $2,800-3,200); a diamond, enamel, 22k and 14k gold floral motif necklace, double-sided with rough-cut diamonds and with enamel, that brought $2,750 (est. $1,500-2,000); two pairs of 18k gold earrings by Tiffany & Co., that claimed $2,250 (est. $1,200-1,500); and a pink tourmaline, black onyx, diamond and 18k gold ring, together with a mabé cultured pearl, diamond and 14k gold ring, that claimed $2,125 (est. $1,000-1,500).

The sale also achieved strong results with three lots each achieving $5,000: a mid-19th century set of six Louis XV style walnut side chairs (est. $1,500-2,500); a first half-20th century, Louis XV style gilt bronze 20-light chandelier (est. $2,000-3,000); and a mid-18th century German Rococo walnut chest of drawers (est. $3,000-5,000).
