COVENTRY.- A renowned poet will put his talent with words to good use when he visits Coventry to give a presentation on the work of a famous artist.

Poet George Szirtes will give a talk on a Brazilian artist whose work is currently on display at The Herbert Art Gallery and Museum in Coventry this month.

The Ana Maria Pacheco: Prints from the Hayward Touring Exhibition is on display in temporary gallery 4 at the Jordan Well venue in the city centre until January 4.

Her evocative paintings, sculptures and prints are influenced by Brazilian folklore, myths and legends as well as the Catholic religion.

Szirtes has published a study of Pacheco's work as well as A Modern Bestiary which combines his poetry with her illustrations.

George has produced 13 books of poetry, including Reel which won the 2005 TS Eliot prize, with many acclaimed translations and riddle-poetry for children.

The free talk, which will be held on Tuesday, December 16 from 12.30pm to 1.30pm, will offer insights into the world and work of Pacheco.

Jack Shuttleworth, from The Herbert, said George would also talk about his experiences of leaving Hungary in 1956 as a refugee and the new Peace and Reconciliation Gallery at The Herbert which is part of the £20 million development and extension.

He said: “This is a wonderful coming-together of two great minds: Ana Maria Pacheco's paintings, prints and sculptures capture the mystery, menace and magic of the great fairy stories and legends; and George who knows her work intimately – and has a thoughtful style and humour that makes his insights accessible and rewarding.

“This will be a treat for anyone who has experienced Ana Maria Pacheco's images luring them into a deeper exploration.”

This talk is part of the monthly Herbert Illuminations series which take place on the third Tuesday of every month at 12.30pm – they are free and booking is not required.
