Palmer Museum of Art Presents Selling the Susquehanna |
UNIVERSITY PARK, PA.- The Palmer Museum of Art presents Selling the Susquehanna, on view through December 21, 2008. The longest river on the eastern seaboard, the Susquehanna River figures prominently in the Museum's Pennsylvania Print Collection. The 330 pieces in the collection were acquired in 1986 as a partial gift from John C. O'Connor and Ralph M. Yeager, who for decades displayed the pieces in their State College restaurant, The Tavern. This exhibition shows how artists, printmakers, and publishers appropriated the Susquehanna for reproduction in highly profitable gift books, town views, and other formats. Just as the river fueled rural and urban economies of all sorts, so too did artists make a living off the picturesque river, its history, and its legends.
