LONDON.- Salisbury Cathedral's exquisite new font, the culmination of an on-going project initiated 10 years ago by the then Canon Treasurer and now Dean of Salisbury, the Very Revd June Osborne, can be seen for the first time in its full beauty filled with flowing water and truly reflecting the majestic stature of the Cathedral's 750 year old architecture.
One of the most significant additions to the fabric of an English Cathedral in recent years, the font has been designed by William Pye, arguably Britain's most distinguished water sculptor, and is Salisbury Cathedral's first permanent font for centuries. Cruciform in shape, and large enough for total immersion baptism, it is a beautiful green patinated bronze vessel which has a Purbeck Freestone plinth and brown patinated bronze grating.
The highlight of Salisbury Cathedral's year of celebrations, the new font will be consecrated by the Archbishop of Canterbury on Sunday 28 September at a special 750th anniversary service, when two infants will be baptised. This major new treasure has been funded primarily by the generosity of Salisbury residents Sir Christopher and Lady Benson and The Jerusalem Trust.
