BALTIMORE.- On Saturday, October 4, 2008, the American Visionary Art Museum in Baltimore, MD opens its 14th annual thematic art exhibition, "The Marriage of Art, Science, & Philosophy." Among the 50 artists featured in the exhibition: The 112 year-old Frank Calloway of Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Mr. Calloway is one of America's (and one of the world's) oldest living men -- his crayon, pen and marker drawings on butcher paper, sometimes a hundred of feet long, are infused with mathematical systems and rhythmic patterns born of his all-consuming creative vision.

Mr. Calloway will travel to Baltimore from his home at the Alice Kidd Nursing Home in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, to see the exhibition of his work in America's official national museum for self-taught, intuitive artistry. He will also attend "The Marriage of Art, Science & Philosophy" Exhibition Opening Party on Friday, October 3 at 7PM. This is the first time Mr. Calloway will have left his home state of Alabama - and his first time traveling by airplane.

Frank is an astronaut who has navigated 112 trips around our Sun, survived untold hardships, injustices, and loss, and yet never fails to radiate kindness to all and a personal and constant engagement with wonder. His instinctive love of numbers, the patterns they make, and the way his meandering calculations balance to form the great masses of numbers that fill his large notebooks make this phenomenon of nature a real star in our national museum's communal exploration of what Art, Science & Philosophy mean to each of us.

Mr. Calloway's drawings appear in an exhibition that also features the wide-ranging inventiveness of Dietlind Preiss's solar-powered sculptures, Stephen Pratt's painted ant colony, Dalton Ghetti's micro-carvings on pencil tips, ink drawings by J.J. Cromer, and myriad mixed-media works inspired by science, philosophy, and inventiveness of all sorts.
