Charles Lindsays Upstream: Fly Fishing in the American West at Boise Art Museum

BOISE.- Boise Art Museum (BAM) is pleased to present UPSTREAM: Fly Fishing in the American West. This is BAM’s first exhibition devoted to fly fishing, and forges a new connection with our outdoor-oriented community! Featured are 25 large-scale black and white photographs by internationally acclaimed photographer (and avid fly fisherman) Charles Lindsay. Several of the photos were taken in central Idaho, where Lindsay lives part-time.

This series of photographs—truly remarkable for their sheer poetic splendor—approaches the soul of nature through fly fishing and the contemplation of water in its native state. Charles Lindsay’s celebration of these timeless elements is performed with a zeal rarely witnessed in art photography. With his mud-splashed camera, he wades into the heart of the wilderness, successfully capturing on film the energy and immediacy of the environment around him—from sun-dappled pools, to rushing streams teeming with life, to a fish on the line from the perspective of an angler. In his own words, Lindsay states, “I am interested in man’s primitive connection to the natural world. In this body of photographs, fly-fishing is my means of contact. I read the water, follow the seasons, and explore the ancient relationship between predator and prey.”

Upstream: Fly Fishing in the American West, builds on a career of over 20 years photographing man’s interaction with the environment. Charles Lindsay’s journey into photography began while working as a geologist in Canada’s Northwest Territories. He later lived in Southeast Asia, photographing subjects as wide ranging as shaman rituals on the remote island of Sumatra to the industrialization of remote villages in India. Lindsay’s photographs documenting the environment have appeared in numerous international publications, including The New York Times Magazine, Aperture, National History, and Audubon.
