Talented Designer Wins Prestigious Prize

LONDON.-Fashionable lighting designer Ulrika Jarl has won Best Eco Product 2007 for her striking Romanésco pendant light and has been given a prize of a free exhibition stand at the Top Drawer Exhibition in Earls Court, London, this January.

Inspired by nature, the Romanésco pendant light looks like a constellation of delicate seashells from a distance, but in fact the light is composed of over a hundred polyester resin casts, each one of a Romanésco cauliflower. The unusual piece has attracted the attention of the design world, including fashion designer Alexander McQueen and is available at Habitat stores.

Ulrika’s success was made possible following national lottery funding through the Arts Council’s Grants for the arts scheme. The funding allowed the Brighton-based designer to develop and launch her latest collection of lighting and homewares, which were presented at the Top Drawer Autumn event.

Ulrika Jarl says; 'I am so delighted to have won this prize. It has also enabled me to take my business forward by getting more of my work into production, allowing me to concentrate on designing rather than making. I will also be launching additions to my latest collection at Top Drawer Spring.'

Bob Martin, Arts Council England South East Crafts Officer says: 'We are delighted by Ulrika’s recent success and that The Arts Council has enabled her career to develop following the recent funding she received through Grants for the arts. I wish her every success for the future.'
