Memento Hominem at The Museum for Objects of Vertu

LONDON.-The Museum for Objects of Vertu presents Memento Hominem, a small and short exhibition curated by Fleur Oakes, on view Saturday 19th & Sunday 20th January, 12-6pm & by appointment until 2nd February. Featuring: Rosie Cooper, Richard Gray, Piers Jamson, Rachael Mathews, Fleur Oakes & Matthew Robins.

The Museum for Objects of Vertu, which opened in 2007, is the smallest museum in London. It houses a collectors' cabinet of tableaux, artefacts and devices and explores ideas of self and household possessions.

Memento Hominem is the first exhibition to be held here, and features work by artists from a broad range of disciplines. Originating from the 16th century, the Memento Hominem cabinet or collection featured personal, and sometimes mysterious objects belonging to one person. In its entirety it would represent their life. For this exhibition artists have been asked to respond with one object which will be presented as part of the museum itself .

Rosie Cooper - Rosie is an artist and freelance curator working mainly in live art and video. Her most recent performance, "An Irregular Haunt", was performed at the V&A in October 2007. She has also curated several shows including "International Everything" a series of talks at Redux Gallery, the "Surrealist Ball" at the V&A in May and "The Empress Tea Room" for the Hackney Empire. Her work is at once a spectacle, a fiasco, a show, a disappointment and sometimes a cliche. For this show she will present "The Enchanted Forest Show" an object that is some kind of set (or part of one).

Richard Gray - Richard Gray is an illustrator, whose narrative and imaginative drawings have been published in London, Paris, Milan and New York. He has worked with Alexander McQueen, Givenchy, Agent Provocateur, Boudicca, Antonio Berardi, Miguel Adrover, Vivienne Westwood and Anna Piaggi amongst others. In 2006 he created an installation, "Morpho-illogical" as part of the V&A's Anna Piaggi "Fashion-ology" exhibition. He has contributed to several books on illustration as well as the V&A's 150th anniversary book.

Piers Jamson - Piers Jamson is an artist whose work is concerned with the concept of a Victorian Retro-Future. Over the past two years he has been building a full size section of late 19th century railway carriage in his studio. This is for a film piece to be shown later this year. For this show he will be exhibiting a small sculpture that combines elements of Victorian architectural decoration.

Rachael Matthews - Rachael Mathews is co-founder of the Cast-Off Knitting Club which seeks to "promote the art of knitting". She has been involved in many exhibitions and installations including "The Knitted Wedding", the "Knit-In" Friday Late at the V&A and more recently the "Analogue Amnesty". Last year she opened her own shop "Prick Your Finger" where she spins her own yarn, runs classes and regularly showcases the work of other artists. She is also the author of two books dedicated to knitting and crochet.

Fleur Oakes - Fleur Oakes is the curator of the Museum for Objects of Vertu which explores the idea of personal possessions and what we leave behind us. She also works as a corset maker producing both practical and impractical pieces, some burlesque, some illustrative.

Matthew Robins - Matthew Robins is an artist and musician. He is also founder member of "The Society of Wonders" with whom he has been developing the Punch and Judy project for many years performing tales that are mysterious, biblical and epic. Matthew has performed at many venues across the country where he has prevented fires, released baby crocodiles and mourned at the top of a beautiful staircase.
