MIAMI BEACH, FL.-Jan Krugier, to many people attending Art Basel Miami Beach, is as well known as the art that adorns the walls. Krugier is recognized not only for the high quality of his collection, but also for his vivid personality and his hand in nurturing Basel Miami during its first years. As one of the project's original supporters, Krugier has been with the fair since its inception and has been involved to the point that once even Daphne, his Jack Russell terrier, had an entry pass!
Samuel Keller, the director of Miami Basel, says “Jan is the artist of the art dealers. For decades, Krugier’s booth has been one that is never to miss, always making a major contribution with spectacular shows--an Art Basel Classic.” Keller has also stated, “On a personal level, Krugier has had a big influence on the way that I think of Art Fairs and how to conceive Miami Basel.”
For this most important of North American art fairs, Jan Krugier creates stunning, evocative installations using works by some of the world's most iconic artists, such as Basquiat, Giacometti, Hockney, Kiefer, Picasso, Richter, and Torres-Garcia, making this booth the most powerful presence in the fair.
This year, Jan Krugier Gallery's installation will be hung employing AC1, an artwork created by Mike Latham, the director of New York-based Arts Corporation, a multimedia arts laboratory that has worked at the intersections of the various arts, architecture, and technology. The work involves the installation in the booth of AC1, a multimedia robot that will allow Mr. Krugier to direct the installation of the booth days ahead from locations of varying remoteness--from Switzerland to the Krugier's hotel up the street.
In the days of the fair’s setup, Krugier will appear on the robot to make adjustments to the hanging and direct the installation of works. He will also appear on the robot from time to time throughout the exhibition to see and communicate with his staff, collectors, dealers and old friends in real time. The exhibition will be, as in years past, a masterpiece and a reflection of Jan Krugier's discerning eye. This year the creation of the spectacular hanging will be a spectacle in itself.
