NEW YORK.- Sundaram Tagore Gallery presents The Physical Self, an exhibition of sculptures by Dutch artist Fré Ilgen. The Physical Self introduces the newest innovations in Ilgens sculptures, as well as a retrospective selection of works attesting to the artists longstanding interest in the confluence of Eastern ideas of enlightenment, or sunyata, and the Western mathematical theories of Quantum Physics. Mrs. Mayen Beckmann will introduce the exhibition at the opening reception held at Sundaram Tagore Gallery on the evening of May 15th, 2007 from 6:30 8:30PM. The exhibition continues through June 9th, 2007.
Uniquely, Fré Ilgen is a sculptor, as well as master colorist and philosopher. He employs concrete and wood in combination with stainless steel and industrial paint to create free-standing sculptures, wall constructions, mobiles, and suspended sculptures that vary in size from modest to monumental. Fré Ilgen lives and works in The Netherlands. His work is exhibited widely in the United States, Europe, South America, Russia, Asia, and Australia. He has created many site-specific pieces for private, corporate, and public collections in The Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland, Japan, Korea, and the United States. Ilgens work is in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, Hünfeld, Germany; NOKIA, Dallas, Texas; and the Merzbacher Collection, Zug, Switzerland.
Sundaram Tagore Gallery will host Global Art in a Global Culture, a discussion moderated by Robert C. Morgan on the positive interpretation of globalism in contemporary art on Wednesday, May 16th, 2007. The discussion is not about the artwork of Fré Ilgen, but rather aligns with his intense interest in the topic of global art.
