NEW YORK, NY.- De Buck will return to Chelsea this September with its first pop-up gallery, taking over a space in the newly redesigned Arts Building at 529 West 20th Street for a month-long program that will mix contemporary artists with modern and secondary-market works.

Running from September 3 through October 4, the temporary gallery marks De Buck’s return to a physical space in the neighborhood and will operate more like a changing exhibition than a conventional static presentation. New rotations are planned each week, allowing the gallery to continually reshape the conversation among artists from different generations.

The opening installation brings together two generations of Belgian art through works by Gommaar Gilliams and the late Roger Raveel.

Gilliams’ large-scale, tactile compositions, often described through their dreamlike and fairytale-inflected imagery, will be shown alongside Raveel’s more structurally driven works. The pairing draws a line between Raveel’s geometric dismantling and reconstruction of everyday experience and Gilliams’ more lyrical contemporary approach.

Rather than presenting the two artists as a straightforward historical comparison, the installation looks at how different generations have approached abstraction, familiar imagery and the transformation of ordinary experience.

The Chelsea pop-up will also feature new work by Devan Shimoyama, while significant secondary-market pieces by Lynne Drexler and François-Xavier Lalanne will add another layer to the rotating program.

That combination — emerging and contemporary practices placed alongside established 20th-century names — appears to be central to De Buck’s approach for the temporary space. Instead of dividing artists by period or market category, the gallery plans to place them in direct visual conversation, with the changing weekly installations giving visitors a reason to return.

The timing also places the Chelsea project squarely within New York’s busy September art calendar.

Later in the month, De Buck will participate in The Armory Show, running September 24–27 at the Javits Convention Center. The gallery will exhibit at Booth 141 in the fair’s Focus Sector, where Gommaar Gilliams will again take a prominent role.

For the fair presentation, his dreamlike paintings will be paired with photographs by Glasgow-born photographer Harry Benson, paintings by Devan Shimoyama and Lynne Drexler, and selected works by 20th-century modern artists.

The two New York presentations give De Buck an opportunity to work at different speeds. The Armory Show offers the concentrated environment of an international art fair, while the Chelsea pop-up allows for a slower, evolving presentation in which works and relationships can change from week to week.

For Gilliams in particular, the month will provide two distinct contexts for his work: first in dialogue with Roger Raveel and Belgian modernism in Chelsea, and later within the broader cross-generational presentation at the Armory Show.

De Buck’s Chelsea pop-up will be open Tuesday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturdays from 1 to 5 p.m., from September 3 through October 4, at The Arts Building, 529 West 20th Street, New York.

De Buck will also participate in The Armory Show, September 24–27, at the Javits Convention Center, 429 11th Avenue, New York, Booth 141.
