CINCINNATI, OH.- The Contemporary Arts Center (CAC) presents New Media/ New Materials: Highlights in Contemporary Art from The Fabric Workshop and Museum, on view through April 15, 2007. Exhibition Sponsor: Jennie Rosenthal Berliant & Allan Berliant. Curated by Cynthia Goodman, Interim Director, Contemporary Arts Center and Marion Boulton Stroud, Artistic Director, The Fabric Workshop and Museum. New Media/New Materials is a survey of major contemporary art highlights represented in works created in collaboration with The Fabric Workshop and Museum (FWM) in Philadelphia. The exhibition brings to the CAC the work of some of the most significant artists of the 20th century: Marina Abramovic, Doug Aitken, Lorna Simpson, Kara Walker, Carrie Mae Weems and William Wegman, among others. Included as well are works by artists winning increasing international recognition such as Laura Owens and Shahzia Sikander. New Media/New Materials also features an installation devoted to multiples produced in collaboration with FWM by major artists, including Louise Bourgeois, Ann Hamilton, Roy Lichtenstein, Claes Oldenburg and Kiki Smith. Current FWM Artists-in Residence Jonathan Bepler and Pae White will both create site-specific installations for the Contemporary Arts Center. A unique feature of the exhibition is the 5th Floor Resource Room. Visitors will have the opportunity to see original fabric swatches and materials related to the artists’ process for the creation of pieces on view.

All works selected for the exhibition were created in collaboration with FWM. Working with FWM studio staff, the artists created the pieces using unconventional materials as well as fabric. These works demonstrate an enormously varied range of artistic innovation, contemporary social relevance, as well as sumptuous textures and sensuous shapes. The Fabric Workshop and Museum adheres to an unusual creative mandate. FWM invites today’s most important artists to participate in its renowned Artist in Residence program. Working collaboratively with the FWM’s staff of printers and technicians, artists are introduced to new techniques, materials, and resources, and are thus able to create innovative works from unconventional materials. Collaboration with FWM allows artists to expand their studio practice and realize projects that would not otherwise be possible. The new works of art and educational materials become part of the museum’s collection, an ever-growing, changing anthology of contemporary art and the creative process.

Artist multiples and items created for the Fabric Workshop and Museum will be available in the CAC Store.

Participating artists: Marina Abramovic, Doug Aitken, Jonathan Bepler, Louise Bourgeois, Maria Fernanda Cardoso, Tom Friedman, Renee Green, Marie Ange Guilleminot , Ann Hamilton, Mona Hatoum, Edgar Heap of Birds, Jim Hodges, Roy Lichtenstein, Glenn Ligon, Donald Lipski, Tristin Lowe, James Luna, Virgil Marti, Laura Owens, Claes Oldenburg, Faith Ringgold, Tim Rollins, Iran do Espirito Santo, Jean Shin, Shahzia Sikander, Lorna Simpson, Kiki Smith, Kara Walker, Carrie Mae Weems, Pae White and William Wegman.
