Fitzwilliam Museum Presents Treasures of Today

CAMBRIDGE, UK.- The Fitzwilliam Museum presents Treasures of Today - Silver from Goldsmiths’ Hall, London, 1980-2006, on view through April 29, 2007. This exhibition represents some of the best, and most innovative silver to have been made in Britain over the past two decades.

Featuring dazzling masterpieces in silver, gold and enamel from the outstanding collection of The Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths, this exhibition consists of over 100 innovative and dramatic examples of contemporary British silver created by 50 mainstream silversmiths since 1980.

The Goldsmiths’ Company, a living successor of the London ancient craft guilds, has one of the finest private collections of British silver, numbering some 8,000 pieces dating from 1350 to present day, housed at Goldsmiths’ Hall. Its pioneering patronage of modern artist-craftsmen silversmiths has supported creative design and craftsmanship in silver throughout the twentieth century and continues to do so. As a result, Britain leads the world in contemporary silver today.

With no public gallery permanently dedicated to this inspirational contemporary collection, this exhibition offers a rare chance to see it in its entirety. The exhibition is complemented by talks by practising silversmiths, courses and family workshops.

Contemporary Silver on Sale - Highly collectable and perfect for that special gift, a stunning selection of unique pieces of contemporary silver - including decorative objects and jewellery crafted by some of today’s most important designers - will be for sale in the Museum shop throughout the exhibition.
