ROCHESTER, NY.- The Memorial Art Gallery (MAG) of the University of Rochester (UR) announces the acquisition of a the painting Snowed In, 1980, by Andrew Newell Wyeth (19172009), further strengthening its esteemed American Art collection.
Snowed In is a luminous watercolor depicting the Anna and Karl Kuerner family home and hen house in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania. Their farm was within walking distance of the artist's home, and an enduring source of inspiration for Wyeth for decades. Known for his evocative depictions of rural life in Pennsylvania and Maine, Wyeth captures a sense of stillness and introspection through his signature muted palette and masterful depiction of light and atmosphere. Snowed In celebrates Wyeths deep emotional connection to the topography and structures in rural Pennsylvania.
This landmark acquisition was generously donated to MAG by Ann Pearsall Brodell and James David Brodell, Sr., M.D. The Brodell family has a strong connection to the University of Rochester. Dr. Brodell completed his residency in orthopedics at the UR in 1983. The Brodells are parents of James D. Brodell Jr. M.D. 20, R25 (orthopedics). The painting is given in honor of their dearest lifelong friends and a revered orthopedic colleague: Doris Kam Yu Chang and Julian Wai Chang, M.D., also a 1983 resident in orthopedics.
Dr. Brodell, the author of the monograph, Andrew Wyeth (1917-2009): A Tribute, states: Wyeths stunning paintings reflect the struggles and emotional consequences of daily life in America. We loaned Snowed In to several Wyeth exhibitions, including Andrew Wyeth: Looking Out, Looking In at the National Gallery of Art in 2014. It is wonderful to observe others enjoying this painting as much as we have, and gratifying to know that it has a permanent home at MAG.
Andrew Wyeth was not previously represented in MAGs collection. We are deeply grateful to Jim and Ann for their generosity, said Sarah Jesse, the Mary W. and Donald R. Clark Director of the Memorial Art Gallery. Their gift ensures that generations of museum visitors can experience the work of one of the most important American painters of the 20th century. We are thrilled to add such a beautiful and significant example of Wyeths work to our rich American art holdings.
Snowed In will be on view in MAGs American Art galleries beginning August 8, 2025.
