HONG KONG.- The premier lifestyle destination of Pacific Place is transforming into an inspiring and fantastical new landscape for Hong Kongs city-wide celebration of the arts. As part of Swire Properties Arts Month 2025, Pacific Place invites art enthusiasts, shoppers and visitors to experience a creative journey from Pacific Place to Starstreet Precinct, with immersive works by Zurich-based artist Monster Chetwynd, and the reimagined works of French artist Laurent Perbos, both displayed from 20 March to 6 April.
Immerse Yourself in a Fantastical World of Lanternflies at Pacific Place
For the third consecutive year, Pacific Place will host the sole offsite project of Art Basel Hong Kongs Encounters, with a site-specific installation. Zurich-based artist Monster Chetwynd will unveil her first public installation in Hong Kong, entitled Lanternfly Ballet. In tribute to Hong Kong's native lantern bug, woodlands, and rich biodiversity, the immersive installation will metamorphose the malls Park Court into a whimsical ecosystem. Together with live performances, this transformative exhibition seamlessly integrates sculpture, sound, audience interaction, and movement, offering a captivating blend of multisensory elements.
At its core, the installation revolves around three large-scale lanternfly sculptures perched on lily pads, a nod to Chetwynd's collage work. This art piece also mirrors Hong Kong's resilience by embodying themes of change, unpredictability, and adaptation.
On selected dates, dancers will bring the space to life with live performances in a dedicated choreography drawing inspiration from The Ballet of the Enchanted Dragonfly and The Little Mermaid, capturing the fleeting essence of the lanternflies through a mesmerising fusion of movement and rhythm. Lanternfly Ballet beckons viewers to delve into its surreal setting, encouraging exploration, interaction, and total immersion. Blurring the lines between art and reality, Chetwynd's collaborative and theatrical approach imbues the ordinary with a sense of whimsy, surprise, and dynamism.
Lanternfly Ballet is presented by Galerie Gregor Staiger, Massimodecarlo and Sadie Coles HQ, supported by Swire Properties, the Official Partner of offsite Encounters.
Challenging the Boundaries Between Playfulness and Conceptual Depth at Starstreet Precinct
During the 2024 Paris Olympics, French contemporary artist Laurent Perbos unveiled Beauty and Gesture (La Beauté et le Geste), a series of sculptures modelled after the legendary Venus de Milo, on the steps of the Palais Bourbon, the seat of the French National Assembly. Following its successful debut, the artwork is now arriving in Hong Kong after a tour in the Chinese Mainland. Starstreet Precinct is excited to present the installation under Swire Properties Arts Month 2025, where its colourful message is sure to delight passersby in this vibrant area of Wan Chai.
The installation comprises six reimaginations of Venus statues, each equipped with sports gear representing various Olympic disciplines, including basketball, boxing, javelin, surfing, tennis and the Paralympic sport of para-archery. By reattaching Venus with arms, Perbos transforms the goddess of love and beauty into a symbol of resilience and determination, while the colours chosen for the eco-friendly acrylic resin sculptures embody the core values of the Olympic spiritliberty, equality, and fraternity.
We are thrilled to showcase exceptional public art from globally renowned artists at Pacific Place and Starstreet Precinct as part of the exciting art programme lineup within Swire Properties Arts Month, an annual celebration of the arts in Hong Kong, stated Wing Chiu, General Manager of Pacific Place.
Our commitment to fostering artistic and cultural dialogue in the city continues, and we are honoured to host the sole offsite exhibition for Art Basel Hong Kongs Encounters for the third consecutive year. We look forward to welcoming visitors to experience these inspiring artworks, which are set to become a platform for creativity and connection within our community.
