ATLANTA, GA.- Atlanta Contemporary announced its Spring 2025 exhibitions that will open on February 27th, showcasing dynamic works by Christian Walker, Rosa Duffy, Eso Tilín Projects, Off The Wall @ 725 Ponce, and more!
Christian Walker: The Profane and the Poignant
Christian Walker: The Profane and the Poignant offers a comprehensive survey of the work of Christian Walker (19532003), a path-making artist, critic, and curator whose work addressed queer sexuality, race, and their intersections in ways that were both provocative and deeply personal. Born in Springfield, Massachusetts, Walker moved to Atlanta in 1984 after earning his Fine Arts Diploma from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. He went on to publish his photo book, The Theater Project, in 1985 at Nexus Press, now known as Atlanta Contemporary.
Walkers work, which was widely celebrated during his lifetime, has been overlooked after his passing. Through archival materials, photographs, and critical writings, The Profane and the Poignant explores Walkers engagement with artist and activist communities in Boston and Atlanta, and reintroduces the artist as a vital figure in the histories of art and photography. The exhibition is curated by independent curators Jackson Davidow and Noam Parness, and organized by the Leslie-Lohman Museum of Art in New York.
TALL AND WILD: Atlanta 1984 - 1994
Rosa Duffy will present TALL AND WILD: Atlanta 1984 - 1994, an installation of mixed media and objects that highlights Atlanta's emerging cultural identity during a pivotal time, examining how its unique social fabric influenced art, music, and community-building. As the founder of For Keeps Books in Atlanta, a space that homes rare and classic Black books and ephemera, Rosa Duffys archival art practice marries her alternative approach to the archive with her impulse to explore their physicality outside of written work. TALL AND WILD offers a visual record of the transformative energy and groundbreaking cultural movements that defined Atlantas current creative foundation.
Off The Wall @ 725 Ponce
Since launching in August 2023, Off the Wall @ 725 Ponce has been illuminating Atlanta's Beltline Trail with film and video art from around the world on the largest screen in the Southeast. Atlanta Contemporary is proud to collaborate with Off the Wall to bring some of the work that has been programmed outside over the last year-and-a-half into the welcoming space of the museum. Featured Artists: Kristan Woolford, Alyson Denny, and Micah and Whitney Stansell. Curated by Greg Zinman.
The Pliable and the Brittle
