VENICE.- The historic Ca Rezzonico Museo del Settecento Veneziano in Venice is currently hosting Leaps, Gaps, and Overlapping Diagrams, a captivating exhibition featuring ten new works by contemporary artist Loris Cecchini. Curated by Luca Berta and Francesca Giubilei, in collaboration with Galleria Continua and VeniceArtFactory, the exhibition highlights Cecchinis innovative exploration of modular elements. For over 15 years, Cecchini has used his artistic practice to investigate the in-between spaces and morphologies created by leaps, gaps, and overlapping diagrams, blending architecture, design, and engineering.
The exhibition opens with monumental installations, such as Waterbones and Arborexence, which greet visitors on the ground floor. These structures, made of modular steel and aluminum components, mimic molecular and vegetal forms. They entwine with the museums exterior architecture, creating a seamless dialogue between the contemporary and the historic. On the first floor, the grand Salone da Ballo transforms into a surreal space featuring Cecchinis Otherworldly Winds series. These resin works, with their textured nylon velveting, evoke vibrant desert landscapes. Alongside them are granular aluminum sculptures from the Zigzags Particles series. The interplay of Cecchinis modern sculptures with opulent Baroque furnishings by Andrea Brustolon and frescoes by Giambattista Crosato and Girolamo Mengozzi Colonna immerses visitors in a unique blend of 18th-century art and cutting-edge modernity.
On the second floor, Cecchini continues his exploration of space and perspective with modular wall sculptures, including Wallwave Vibration (Chorus Transition Probabilities), which introduces a sonic vibration concept that provocatively dissolves architectural surfaces. A telescope from the Zigzags Particles series points toward Giandomenico Tiepolos iconic fresco, Il Mondo Novo. This juxtaposition underscores Cecchinis vision of art as a transformative device, encouraging shifts in perspective and blending reality with imagination. The telescope reinforces the idea of art as a portal to the unknown, echoing the fantastical themes of Tiepolos fresco.
A recurring motif throughout the exhibition is the cloud, a symbol bridging the 18th-century ceiling frescoes by Tiepolo, Guarana, Crosato, and Diziani, and Cecchinis modular sculptures. Both serve as intermediaries between reality and the virtual, celebrating organic forms that adapt to their surroundings. This connection underscores the exhibitions deeper dialogue between historical and contemporary perspectives.
Visitors to Ca Rezzonico can experience Leaps, Gaps, and Overlapping Diagrams as part of the museums general admission. This thought-provoking exhibition bridges centuries of artistic innovation, offering a fresh perspective on the interplay between history, architecture, and modern art.
