Cukrarna Gallery presents Fall/winter programming
Installation view.

LJUBLJANA.- The Layering exhibition looks at the practices of painting and sculpture in the medium of collage and assemblage within contemporary Slovene art. The exhibition features works by 29 Slovene artists, including individual artists and art collectives, who have employed these techniques, either as a primary or occasional working method from the late 1970s to the present. Curators Mateja Podlesnik and Alenka Trebušak have conceived the exhibition with a focus on layering and transformation, integrating the artworks into a coherent yet dynamic spatial concept. The exhibition design by Ajdin Bašić is an integral part of the setup, structured around three layers: the white wall, color, and freestanding elements. Group exhibition Layering offers a reflection on the gap between clear definitions and artistic practice, as it becomes apparent that works that can be clearly categorised as belonging to one technique or another are the exception rather than the rule. Some artists hang their three-dimensional works on the wall instead of placing them in the space, while others position two-dimensional works in the space or even use collages and assemblages to create installations.

Artists: Igor Andjelić, Maja Babič Košir & Nevena Aleksovski, Mirsad Begić, Emerik Bernard, Viktor Bernik, Vanja Bućan, Mito Gegič, Marjan Gumilar, Stane Jagodič, Žiga Kariž, Dušan Kirbiš, Janja Kosi, Marko A. Kovačič, Polonca Lovšin, Mina Fina, Alen Ožbolt, Alenka Pirman, Ivo Prančič, Adrijan Praznik, Mojca Senegačnik, Small but dangers, Mladen Stropnik, Maruša Štibelj, Andrej Štular, Tugo Šušnik, Terrah, Marko Tušek, Žarko Vrezec, V.S.S.D.

Nicolás Lamas: Scenarios for Coexistence
October 25, 2024–January 12, 2025

Nicolás Lamas presents his solo exhibition Scenarios for Coexistence at Parterre Gallery at Cukrarna Gallery. Curated by Alenka Trebušak, the exhibition examines the intersections between humans, nature and technology through multidisciplinary works. Lamas’ art practice explores the complex relationships between materials connected by biological and technological elements, and creating art installations that challenge established ways of understanding the world. As part of Parterre Gallery’s programming scheme, which invites artists to collaborate under the premise of “one space—one artist—one project”, the exhibition is conceived as an archaeological site. By bringing various categories and the links between the past and the future together, the artist invites the viewer to reflect on the changing nature of all things that form part of the constant flow of growth, transformation and decay.

Nika Autor: Ecologies of Solidarity—Newsreels of Tomorrow
November 15, 2024–January 19, 2025

A selection of six video essays and films by Slovene artist Nika Autor is the second exhibition of the “Moving Images” cycle curated by Alenka Gregorič. The artist is a co-founder of Newsreel Front (Obzorniška fronta), a collective of creators working across film, visual arts and cultural and political theory. Her art practice primarily reflects on pressing social issues, revealing glimpses of the often-overlooked aspects of everyday human life, giving a voice to the unheard and a face to the unseen. Divided into three time sequences, the exhibition Ecologies of Solidarity—Newsreels of Tomorrow presents six videos addressing the themes such as refugees, the historical significance of Balkan railway lines, and “Gastarbeiters” (economic migrants).

Dexter Sinister x Cukrarna: Grey Area
October 2, 2024–September 30, 2025

Projects presented in the Grey Area can also be viewed online at Cukrarna Gallery’s website.
