NEW YORK.- Lisa Phillips, Henry Luce III Director of the New Museum of Contemporary Art, today announced the appointment of Massimiliano Gioni as Curator. Beginning October 1, Gioni will join the recently created team of Chief Curator Richard Flood and Senior Curator Laura Hoptman in organizing exhibitions and programs for the museum’s new building at 235 Bowery, scheduled to open in late 2007.

Gioni most recently curated the highly acclaimed 4th Berlin Biennial for Contemporary Art, Of Mice and Men, with Maurizio Cattelan and Ali Subotnick. Previously, he has co-curated Manifesta 5 (San Sebastian, Spain, 2004) and Monument to Now at the Deste Foundation (Athens, 2004). He serves as Artistic Director of the Nicola Trussardi Foundation in Milan, where he has organized shows and special projects with artists including Darren Almond, John Bock, Maurizio Cattelan, Martin Creed, Elmgreen and Dragset, Urs Fischer and Anri Sala. At the 2003 Venice Biennale, he curated The Zone at the Italian Pavilion. Gioni has been collaborating with Cattelan and Subotnick since 2002 on a series of non-institutional practices such as the Wrong Gallery, the Down by Law exhibition within the 2006 Whitney Biennial, and the publications Charley and The Wrong Times. From 2000-2002 he served as the US Editor of Flash Art magazine, and has contributed articles to Parkett, Art Press, and Domus.

“Massimiliano has quickly proven himself to be one of the brightest young talents around. His international curatorial perspective and experience will strengthen the New Museum’s dedication to a global presentation of new art and new ideas,” said Lisa Phillips, “and his appointment rounds out our dynamic, multi-generational curatorial team.”
