Roland Auctions' rare Civil War items from General D.S. Stanley sell at Oct. 19th sale
Gen. Stanley's Commissions (Incl. Lincoln), Partly printed military commissions on vellum. Sold for $10,625.



GLEN COVE, NY.- Roland Auctions NY October 19th Multi-Estates Auction turned out to be the house’s strongest sale since early this year with high-bidding across the board, topping $700,000. Leading the sale were several pieces of Fine and Modern art, led by two Samia Halaby (Palestinian/American, b. 1936) abstract oils on canvas.

Also coming in strong were select jewels from the collection of Baroness Gabriele von Langendorff that were not included in the previous auction of her collection a few months back.

But the auction was largely fueled by the excitement from Civil War collectors, bidding on many personal items from the archive of Union Army General David Sloane Stanley, an actual highly-esteemed two-star Major General and Medal of Honor recipient, spanning his entire military career from being a West Point Cadet, through the American Civil War, the Indian Wars and beyond.

It’s not very often that rare Civil War artifacts actually belonging to a Civil War general come up for auction. But Roland had a large collection of personal items from the archive of General Stanley.


Civil War, General D.S. Stanley blood-stained battle-worn white linen collared tunic. Sold for $8,750.


These included Gen. Stanley's Civil War Commissions, Partly printed military commissions on vellum, comprising commissions from 1864-1866 inluding: July 1, 1864 appointment to the rank of "Major in the Fifth Regiment of Calvary,” signed at right "Abraham Lincoln" and counter-signed by Edwin Stanton as Secretary of War. Bears a partial embossed blue paper seal of the War Office at upper left. 2) Group of four commissions (3 with stamped facsimile signatures of Andrew Johnson as President and 2 with stamped facsimile signatures of Edwin Stanton as Secretary of War). Johnson Administration documents are dated from July 17, 1866 to August 2, 1866. 3) Col. W.S. Stokes and Capt. Elmer Otis, contained under glass in a circular cherrywood frame. Sold for $10,625, while Gen. D.S. Stanley’s Blood-Stained Shirt, Civil War battle-worn white linen collared tunic with four buttons sold for $8750. The shirt was worn by General Stanley when leading the Charge of Opedyke Brigade, 4th Army Corps, at the Battle of Franklin, Tenn., November 30th, 1864,", accompanied by an antique 6" x 3" envelope inscribed: "This Was Shot Off Gen. D.S. Stanley When Wounded At the Battle of Franklin, Tenn. The Bullet Passed Through the Back of the Neck,”

Gen. Stanley's Shoulder Straps, Group of shoulder straps, comprising: 1) Pair of gold bullion border straps with double silver Maj. Gen. stars, one bearing a glued-down paper strip inscribed by Gen. Stanley, "Maj. Genl's Straps, Worn Chickamauga Campaign Under Command of Genl. Rosencrans, Sept. 1863. Commander of the Cavalry". [Each: 1/4" H x 4 1/8" W x 1 1/2" D]. 2) Pair of gold bullion boarder straps with double silver Maj. Gen. stars, one bearing a glued-down paper strip inscribed by Gen. Stanley "...Hood's Invasion of the Battle of Franklin, 1864". [Each" 3/8" H x 4 1/2" W x 1 3/4" D]. 3) Brown velvet jacket cuff bearing two brass Federal Eagle buttons, stamped on bottom "S.H. & G. / New York". [Cuff: 2 1/2" H x 5 1/2" W x 3/8" D; Buttons: 9/16" Diam.], selling for $7,500.

Also offered at Roland was Gen. D.S. Stanley’s Civil War Shell Jacket, Non-regulation Prussian Hussar-style black velvet shell jacket with gold cord accents and five toggle closures; collars bear one six-point star on either side. [Shoulders: 17" W; Sleeves: 23" L; Overall: 31" L]. Sold for $1625. a Civil War and Indian Wars: CDV Album, Carte de Visite album belonging to Gen. D.S. Stanley, featuring ornately tooled and gilt-stamped spine and covers, produced by "The Photograph Album, New York", containing 17 CDV's of Union enlisted and officer portraits as well as 13 CdV's of Native American tribal leaders. Uniformed Union military figures include: Gen. James Longstreet, Gen. Joseph Hooker, Col. Charles G. Harker, Col. Robert Petterson Kennedy, Gen. George Crook and Gen. William Tecumseh Sherman, among others. Native American tribal leaders include: Little Crow, Chief Shakopee III (aka Little Six), Bee-She-Kee (aka Buffalo), Ne-Bah-Quah-Om (aka Big Dog), Wah-Bo-Jeeg (White Fisher), Han-Ye-Tu-Was-Te (Beautiful Night) and Old Bets. Some cards bearing Internal Revenue stamps on verso. Photographers include: A.S. Morse, Ball & Thomas and Whitney's Gallery. [8 5/8" H x 7 1/4" W x 1 3/4" D], which sold for $10,125.

Also featured were the Indian Wars: Gen. Stanley's Native Cabinet Cards, Rare grouping of ten albumen photographic portraits depicting Native American tribal leaders from various Sioux tribes in the Northern Plains, all inscribed at bottom margin with the sitter's name (some with annotations made at Fort Sully on verso). Subjects include Sitting Crown, Bull's Ghost, Big Razee, Black Eye, Running Antelope, Thunder Howl, Walking Shooter, Two Bears, Big Head and Bear's Rib. Some photographs imprinted on verso "Alex. Gardner / 921 Penna Ave. / Washington, D.C." [Each: 6 1/2" x 4 1/2"]., selling for $5,625, Civil War: Gen. D.S. Stanley’s two pairs of shoulder straps, comprising: 1) Pair of gold bullion captain's shoulder boards, one bearing a glued-down paper strip inscribed" "Captain 1st Cavalry 16 March 1861. First Pair (of) Shoulder Straps / Forts Smith & Washita / Indian Territory". [Each: 1/4" H x 4 1/8" W x 1 1/2" D]. 2) Pair of gold bullion shoulder straps, one bearing a glued-down paper strip inscribed: "Maj. Genl.'s Straps Worn in Tullahoma Campaign, June, July 1863. Genl. Rosencranz Commanding / D.S.S.". [Each: 3/8" H x 4" W x 3/8" D], going for $5313 and Civil War: Gen. Stanley - Two Cavalry Sashes, Two yellow silk net wove Cavalry Officer sashes. [126" L and 130" L (including tassels); 4 1/2" W and 6" W]. which sold for $4065 and Civil War: Gen. D.S. Stanley Dress Uniform Epaulets, Pair of fine quality gold bullion and twisted gold wire board epaulets worn by General David Sloane Stanley, accompanied by a painted tin document tube inscribed "Commission of Brevet Major General / David S. Stanley / United States Army". [Epaulets: 4" H x 7 7/8" W x 6 3/4" D; Document tube: 2 1/8" Diam. x 17" W], selling for $1125. From the Indian Wars, Gen. D.S. Stanley's ornate presentation sword with gilt bronze hilt and steel blade, field officer issue with patriotic symbols throughout, the blade engraved "Brig. Genl. D.S. Stanley" on one side and "Presented by Enlisted Men / 22nd U.S. Infy" on the other. Scabbard composed of polished steel with gilt bronze fittings bearing a single five-point Brigadier General's star. Retains sword knot with metallic gold thread band and canvas-lined leather cover. [Sword: 37 1/2" L (overall); Sold for $3125.
