NEW YORK.- Artist Buffie Johnson died at age 94. She was born in New York City on February 20, 1912. She studied at the Art Students League and the Academy Julian in Paris. She earned an M.A. from the U. of California, Los Angeles. She was an instructor at the Parsons School of Design from 1946-1950. In 1943 her work was included in Peggy Guggenheim’s New York gallery exhibition Art of This Century with works by 31 women. She was commissioned to paint a large abstract mural for the Astor Theater on Broadway in the late 1950’s. The theatre was demolished in 1982 and the panels were returned to her. Major museums such as the Whitney Museum of American Art, Guggenheim, Brooklyn Museum and the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston hold works by Buffie Johnson in their collections.
