WEST PALM BEACH, FLA.- The Norton Museum of Art is busy this summer showcasing six works by French sculptor Auguste Rodin and 10 works by such stars of Pop Art as Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Robert Indiana, and Frank Stella.
The five small-scale bronze sculptures by Rodin (1840 - 1917), along with the monumental Cybelle, in an adjoining gallery, explore more than 20 years of the artists experimentation. The pieces are on long-term loan from the Collection of Iris Cantor and the Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Foundation.
Its a treat for us to showcase these treasures that offer a window into the creative mind of Rodin, said Ghislain dHumières, the Nortons Kenneth C. Griffin Director and CEO. And we are grateful to Iris Cantor and the Cantor Foundation for the opportunity to share these works with the public.
The Norton also looks ahead half a century from the art of Rodin to the Pop Art movement that began in the 1950s.
Warhols Superman swoops in and is included in the Nortons installation in Friedman Gallery, 15 Minutes: A Moment in Pop Art. That 1981 acrylic and silkscreen ink on canvas is on loan from a private collection.
His famous Flowers, from 1964, shares gallery space with James Rosenquists Flower Garden, Lichtensteins Water Lilies with Cloud, and Indianas The Golden Future of America.
We can all relate to these artworks, said J. Rachel Gustafson, the Nortons Chief Curatorial Operations & Research Officer. These sculptures and paintings resonate because they evoke universal truths whether that be the gesture of a musicians hand, as we see with Rodin, or the messages of the mass consumer and popular culture in Warhols work that began after World War II and continue to this day.
The art is on view now.
