NEW YORK, NY.- In the art world, a resurgence of Western aesthetics is taking place, seen in the works of various contemporary artists and even in the music of popular artists like Beyonce and Post Malone. Sorrel Sky Gallery brings cowboy core to New York by debuting Maeve Eichelberger’s three-dimensional collage sculptures fabricated with plexiglass on July 18, 2024, from 5-8 p.m. Location: 419 West Broadway, New York, NY.

Maeve Eichelberger's work combines rustic charm with contemporary art, sprinkling in pops of vibrant colors and incorporating elements from her ranch upbringing. She creates unique, saddle-shaped sculptures using a type of clear plastic called plexiglass. Colorado native Eichelberger's work draws inspiration from her upbringing on a ranch, offering a fresh perspective on the West. Now, she has added inspiration from the flora she sees when fly fishing or hiking. It is important for her to show the actual species, native and invasive, that are changing the land.

This series is inspired by various saddle makers. Their tooling designs, in conjunction with the veracious colors of the Western sky, blooming desert, canyons, and water, emulate the fantasy life source of neon.

“When we look at anything, a landscape our eye can see the foreground, middle, and background and the peripheral. Your eye and your brain connect them. My work ends up being this sequential element seen at the moment. Still, I create a different interpretation by highlighting or focusing on an often more abstracted, emphasized, brilliant, or vibrant element that seems exceptionally more important to me than it did when I captured it.”

She will be showing fluorescent colors and combining layers of plexiglass to create new colors, while playing with color theory. Eichelberger wants the viewer to spend time studying and looking at her work, to see how it changes from different angles and perspectives.

Willie Nelson’s version of this country song, by Towns Van Zandt, has etched a nostalgic memory of driving the farm truck to pick up hay bails from the pastures. With itchy arms, a cold roadie, and music serenading the field, this song emphasized the non-gender roles of ranching; whomever was able helped out!

“I’m terrible at slowing down,” she admits. “We are so quick to swipe and scroll. I want people to be engaged in a different way. I want to challenge perception, the material and the viewer.”

Maeve Eichelberger, a Colorado native, creates three-dimensional collage artwork that explores both urban and rural lifestyles. She uses Plexiglass, a modern and durable material, to layer and reflect the diverse aspects of the American West.
Her work will be on display with the powerful images of David Yarrow whose large prints of wildlife and storytelling, primarily in black and white will provide an elegant background for Eichelberger's sculptures.
