NEW PALTZ, NY.- The Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art at SUNY New Paltz proudly presents “In and Out of Lineage: Tracing Artistic Heritage Through SUNY New Paltz Faculty,” an exhibition featuring artwork by 20 members of the University’s Departments of Art and Design, each exploring the symbiotic relationship between creating, teaching and mentoring.

“In and Out of Lineage” will open Sept. 7 and remain on view until Dec. 8, 2024. The exhibition is guest curated by Eva Zanardi.

“In and Out of Lineage” considers the profound connection between artistic expression and learned techniques. The exhibition explores whether traditions are preserved or transcended, and asks whether creative influence follows a linear path from teachers to students or manifests through complex networks of exchange that defy simple categorizations. “In and Out of Lineage” invites viewers to consider the intricate webs of pedagogy and inspiration evident in the artwork of SUNY New Paltz faculty.

“Invisible threads that bind teachers and learners weave a narrative of bidirectional knowledge transfer,” Zanardi said. “Far from being mere conduits, artist-educators actively engage in intergenerational dialogue where information flows freely and enriches everyone.”

By including reflections on artistic lineage from each of the exhibiting artists, “In and Out of Lineage” reveals how they simultaneously influence and are influenced by future generations of artists. This exhibition is a testament to the transformative power of education and the enduring impact of those who create, teach and inspire.

Eva Zanardi is a freelance writer, independent curator, art advisor and owner of Visitor Center, a contemporary art gallery located in Newburgh, New York. Her writing has been featured in various publications including Flash Art, White-Hot Magazine, Widewalls and Art & Object Magazine, among other international print and online media. Prior to relocating to upstate New York, Eva founded and directed GR Gallery, which was known for its cutting-edge contemporary art exhibitions in New York City.
