In your face: contemporary graphic design, From 5 August. Intelligent, irreverent and witty, Australian graphic design is out there making its mark globally. Sixteen unique case studies – including print, web, animation, street art and tattoo design – unravel the creative process as they are juxtaposed against works from the Powerhouse Museum’s 20th Century Australian graphic design archive. SMH Young Designer of the Year Award, From 5 August. This prestigious award, with the covetable prize of a trip for two to the Milan Furniture Fair, has been launching careers since 1997. Under the banner of ‘Commune’, this year’s bright young entrants rose to the challenge of creating a design that promotes or enhances a sense of community, interchange of ideas or friendly conversation. Australian Design Awards, From 5 August. A sleek barbecue, esky on wheels, ambient cordless table lamp, and fun foldaway trike for kids, are just some of the products on show from the 2006 Australian Design Awards. Each year a number of the designs are hand-picked for the Powerhouse Museum exhibition for their excellence in design and innovative use of technology and materials. Free with Museum entry.

Home Beautiful Product of the Year Awards, 18-27 August. Discover good design at home, at the Home Beautiful Product of the Year Awards. This interactive exhibition showcases innovative design across all categories of the home – from chairs to textiles. Vote for the design icons of tomorrow, with a special People’s Choice Award, and tail the prestigious team of judges as they compare the best products to emerge this year.
