Cher - An Oscar winner for best actress in Moonstruck, Cher has also been awarded a Grammy, an Emmy, Best Actress by The Cannes Film Festival and three Golden Globes, among her many other honors. Her meteoric career began in the mid-1960s when she met producer and songwriter Sonny Bono, who became her mentor. They married, and as Sonny and Cher, they became an overnight sensation with I Got You Babe, their first worldwide runaway hit. A string of hits followed which led to one of the most successful television variety series ever, The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour, which first showcased Chers comedic talent. In the early 1970s, Chers solo recording career started with Bob Dylans All I Really Want To Do, and she went on to record the number one hits Dark Lady, Half Breed and Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves. In the disco era her huge hit Take Me Home topped the charts.
In a career breakthrough, in 1981 Cher stunned fans and critics with her leading Broadway role in Come Back to the Five and Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean. Subsequently her film career quickly took off, beginning with the Oscar nominated performance in Silkwood (1983) followed by Mask (Cannes film festival Best Actress) (1985), The Witches of Eastwick (1987), Suspect (1987) and her Academy Award-winning performance in Moonstruck (1987).
Fresh from her Oscar, Cher returned to recording, thrilling new and old fans alike with the unprecedented eye-popping music video for the hit If I Could Turn Back Time. But, musically, the best was yet to come. In 1999, the Grammy-winning Believe topped the charts in more than 20 countries. In 2002, another top ten album Living Proof led to the record smashing Farewell Tour. Over a period of three years Cher performed an astonishing 325 concerts worldwide for millions of fans. The television special, which aired on HBO, won three Emmys.
Jewelry, Fashion, Stage-Worn Costumes and Memorabilia - Spanning 40 years of Chers career, the sale will feature approximately 200 items from her professional and personal wardrobe, including a stunning array of original gowns and costumes designed by American fashion icon Bob Mackie. A selection of original sketches signed by the designer will also be available. Fans and collectors will recognize pieces from The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour, The Cher Show, concerts and awards shows. Highlighting this section is a Mackie original worn by Cher to the 1998 Academy Awards Ceremony (est. $4/6,000), and other notable designs include a black net gown with multi-colored embroidered dots and stones worn by Cher during the Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour on January 16, 1974, for her spotlight performance of Dark Lady, which reached number one on the pop charts the same year (est. $3/5,000), and a full-length red velvet gown with a matching high-collar full length cape worn by Cher on the May 4, 1975, Cher Show during her opening song Where You Lead (est. $2/4,000).
The Cher Collection will also feature 85 lots of her personal jewelry from the past 35 years, including necklaces, rings, bracelets, earrings and chokers in gold, silver and turquoise, many with cross motifs. Notable pieces include an 18K White Gold and Diamond Cross Necklace (est. $800/1,200) and a pair of Gold and Diamond Star Earrings (est. $600/800). Also included are beaded pieces hand-made by Cher.
Paintings, Furniture and Decorative Works of Art - Throughout her life Cher has been a collector of beautiful things, most of which came to live in her Malibu home, featured on the cover of the August 2002 issue of Architectural Digest, with paintings, furniture and decorative works of art creating an ethereal and serene environment in the Gothic taste. Renowned English architect, designer and theorist Augustus Welby Pugin was a prime inspiration for her. A leader of the mid-19th century Gothic Revival movement in architecture, Pugin is best known for his work on many of Englands great churches and on the Houses of Parliament.
Jason Preston, Sothebys specialist in Fine and Decorative Arts, said the selection of items offered from Chers collection demonstrate how deeply interested she was in educating herself on the Gothic Revival movement. Each drawing, decorative object and piece of furniture she purchased contributed to her connoisseurship in this field. Additionally, Cher collected a group of attractive Old Master and 19th century paintings complementing the aesthetic of her home. We are honored that Cher has chosen us to offer this intriguing collection at auction and especially pleased that we will be assisting her in raising funds for charity.
Among the highlights of the more than 400 lots of fine and decorative arts in the sale is The Scarisbrick Hall Bed, a fine Gothic Revival brass bed, circa 1865, attributed to Pugin and manufactured by John Hardman & Co., Birmingham (est. $20/30,000). Other pieces include a Gothic Revival gilt and polychrome-decorated frame, circa 1840, designed by Pugin for the de Lisle familys chapel at Grace Dieu (pictured here, est. $5/7,000); an early Victorian Gothic Revival oak reading table, in the manner of Pugin, circa 1845 (est. $3/5,000); and a pair of Gothic Revival painted brass chandeliers, in the manner of Pugin, manufactured by John Hardman & Co.
