HdM Gallery celebrates 15th anniversary with new Beijing space
"We are moving on from our 400 square metre gallery in the 798 Art District in Beijing, which has been our working home for the last 15 years, hosting our exhibitions, projects, and cultural activities."

BEIJING.- This year marks the 15th anniversary of HdM Gallery, which was founded in Beijing by Hadrien de Montferrand with the support of Laurent Dassault and Olivier Hervet. To celebrate the anniversary, HdM Gallery announced the launch of a new space in Beijing and a new show: 15 Years Anniversary Exhibition.

A Family Anniversary

A Few Figures

Since the establishment of the gallery, we have organised more than 120 exhibitions across our spaces in Beijing, London, Paris, and Hangzhou. We featured more than 50 artists, including 30 artists from China and 20 from outside China. The gallery has actively participated in more than 80 art fairs, locally and internationally. Since our first show in 2009, more than 2,000 artworks have entered public, private, and institutional collections. We have organised 12 museum and institutional exhibitions, realising our ambition to establish ourselves as one of the leading contemporary art galleries in China.

A Group of Friends and a Family

The HdM family is made up of the people at the heart of our business: our current and former colleagues, our artists, and the wider artistic communities we have worked with. The gallery’s operating philosophy, as said by the gallery’s founder Hadrien de Montferrand, ‘is to cultivate a family-like environment – caring, belonging, respecting each other.’ With this in mind, the gallery attracts, develops, and retains exceptional people and has done since its founding. This is well reflected in the gallery’s low turnover rate with the longest-serving employee having been with the gallery for 15 years.

Throughout the past 15 years, we have strived to adhere to the highest professional standards to serve artists, collectors, and institutions. We aim to provide an independent platform for artist’s creation, to use our global network to deliver the best service for our collectors, and to build an enduring relationship with institutions across the globe.

Our New Space

We are moving on from our 400 square metre gallery in the 798 Art District in Beijing, which has been our working home for the last 15 years, hosting our exhibitions, projects, and cultural activities. Driven by the ambition of better supporting our artists and adding to the gallery’s portfolio, we have decided to open a new larger space, which spans over 500 square metres.

HdM Team

The new space, also located in the 798 Art District, has been designed by Sybarite architects, who have extensive knowledge of China’s luxury retail infrastructure. Our collaboration with Sybarite aims to rethink the way an art gallery is designed. The new space embraces the concept of preserving the existing features whilst subtly injecting newness.

“The overarching concept was to focus on preserving the existing building’s inherent sense of solidity and texture, with interiors celebrating the characteristic and founded rawness of both materiality and form. From the outset, there was a desire to create a delicate yet impactful juxtaposition between the existing architecture and any infused newness”. Torquil McIntosh, Co-Founder, Sybarite

The Anniversary Exhibition

This key exhibition provides a snapshot of the gallery’s current program, highlighting the dialogues, correspondences, and distinctions between the members of its diverse community of artists. Since its establishment, the gallery is dedicated to support and develop artists’ careers. Although this exhibition does not showcase works by artists in the ‘Older Generation Creators’ section from the three sequential exhibitions titled ‘History in the Making: 20 Years Chinese Paintings from 1950 – 1970’ we have held, these artists have played a great role in shaping the gallery’s program and public recognition. Soon, the public will be able to admire more works of this period at HdM GALLERY.

Created in 2009 by Hadrien de Montferrand with the support of Laurent Dassault and Olivier Hervet, HdM Gallery specializes in all disciplines of contemporary art – painting, sculpture, video and installation - with a particular focus on Chinese artists. Based in Beijing, it opened a project space in Paris in 2021.

The gallery is dedicated to supporting recognized artists from different horizons; most of its Chinese artists are in the early stage of their career and the gallery promotes their work abroad. International artists on the other hand are more established and the gallery mainly attempts to raise awareness of their work in China.

Besides its normal exhibition program, HdM Gallery participates in art fairs in China and abroad including Art Basel Hong Kong, Art021 Shanghai, Art Brussels and Art Geneva, produces academic catalogues, and organizes institutional shows for its artists.
