Historic meets modern in Hindman's November Western & Contemporary Native American Art Auction
The top lot of the auction is expected to be an oil on canvas by Eanger Irving Couse (American, 1866-1936) entitled Mysteries of the Stream (lot 30; estimate: $200,000 - $300,000).

DENVER, CO.- Important works by iconic western American artists Eanger Irving Couse and Philip Russell Goodwin are expected to headline Hindman’s fall Western & Contemporary Native American Art auction on November 1st and 2nd. The duo lead a historic western art session that will be offered alongside a strong selection of contemporary western, wildlife, and contemporary Native American fine art and objects.

The top lot of the auction is expected to be an oil on canvas by Eanger Irving Couse (American, 1866-1936) entitled Mysteries of the Stream (lot 30; estimate: $200,000 - $300,000). Couse was a founding member and the first president of the famed Taos Society of Artists, a cooperative of artists who settled in New Mexico in the early 1900s to capture the unspoiled landscapes and native inhabitants. Mysteries of the Stream perfectly encapsulates the ethos of the society and is quintessential Couse, depicting a Native American man and boy perched on a rocky shore intently observing a running stream.

Philip Russell Goodwin (American, 1881-1935) rose to prominence thanks largely to his illustrations, most notably for Jack London's The Call of the Wild. But over time his wildlife and outdoor scenes have become some of the most coveted paintings in the category. On offer in the November auction is Making for Camp (lot 69; estimate: $100,000 - $200,000), an oil on canvas showing two mountain men leaving their beached canoe and setting out into the forest presumably, given the title, to make camp for the night.

The art of Dale Nichols is certainly no stranger to the auction block, but it is rare to find a piece by the Nebraska-born artist best known for his snow-covered landscapes to be offered amidst art of the American West. While it might be a unique scene for the artist, the 1953 oil on canvas entitled White Dove of the Desert (estimate: $20,000 - $30,000) is an extraordinary example of Nichols’ characteristic style.

The November 1st sale will also include a session of American Furniture by renowned designer Thomas Molesworth. The session includes two spindle-sided armchairs (lots 103 & 106; both estimates: $6,000 - $8,000), a spindle-sided couch (lot 104; estimate: $8,000 - $12,000), and a Molesworth club chair with later ledger-style painted upholstery (lot 107; estimate: $8,000 - $12,000), amongst other accent pieces.

Hindman will feature items from a Private Collection curated by Janet and Daniel Hidding in the November 1st auction. In addition to the Couse, the collection features an exciting assortment of western and Native American fine art, including works by John Nieto, Allan Houser, Dan Namingha, and Fritz Scholder. Some of the highlights of the collection are:

• Lot 168 | Fritz Scholder (Luiseño, 1937-2005) | Dancers at San Ildefonso
Estimate: $100,000 - $150,000

• Lot 158 | John Nieto (American, 1936-2018) | Rancho de Taos Church
Estimate: $15,000 - $20,000

• Lot 188 | Allan Houser (Chiricahua Apache, 1914-1994) | Acorn Harvest

• Lot 189 | Allan Houser (Chiricahua Apache, 1914-1994) | War Pony

• Lot 41 | Frank McCarthy (American, 1924-2002) | The Signal
Estimate: $12,000-18,000

Hindman will once again offer a strong selection of paintings by renowned artist Fritz Scholder as highlights within the Contemporary Native American Art session of the November 1st auction. Created between the years 1968 and 1977, this group of works sourced from several different collections represents Scholder’s most coveted period of creation.

Following a year of record-breaking sale results and an acclaimed show at The Whitney Museum, Hindman is thrilled to once again be offering an original work on paper from the Kalispel series by Jaune Quick-to-See Smith (Confederated Salish/Kootenai, b. 1940) (lot 175; estimate: $10,000 - $15,000) as another Contemporary Native American highlight.
